So what are some southern California gun shops I need to check out?

Specifically in the Bakersfield, LA, Lancaster and San Diego areas.

It's a lost cause, and it should be a hard lesson for everyone else in the nation.

Looking for fair prices, and guns that are not found in Wal-mart or Big 5 Sporting goods.

Something beyond the $350 Savage, TC, Remington or Howa.

I know there are a couple up there in the desert but I'm not familiar with them.

In Bakersfield, there are about 8-10 gun shops and a couple of kitchen table FFLs.

For gun shops:
Valley Guns
Bear Mountain Sports
Ole' Boy Outdoors

The biggest and the sleaziest in town is Second Amendment Sports.

For Kitchen Table FFL:
Rafael at Get A Gun

Pacific Sporting Arms in Duarte carries the really nice stuff. Doubles, Blasers, Kriegoff, a few Hollands.

Very comfortable shop. If you like Motorcycles then you really owe it to yourself to get there and see the garage. There are a couple of serious prizes there.

Robert

I failed to read this post. My answer: buy off the web and have it shipped in and pay the transfer fees (normally $50 to ship in).

Above all: STAY AWAY FROM FOWLERS AND THE STOCKADE.

I have nothing but loathing and hatred for those jackholes.

To back it up: A friend of mine was dying from ALS. We went over to Fowlers to make a bulk transfer of firearms - about 10. I called ahead to make sure they'd be able to do it.

Direct quote from the counter guy as he turned his back to me "I don't have time to do that kind of shit." and he walked away.

Direct quote.

I went to the OC Gun Range and they were happy to help. Good people there and they get my business any day of the week.

My buddy died three months later.

Rest in Peace, my friend. (*He's the guy sitting down.)

Regards,

Robert

Try to put aside the loathing and hatred and focus on the fond memories of your friend. As difficult as that is at times, life is easier that way. (Not that I'm any better at it than you are.)

BWW,

Try the Turners chain www.turners.com . They have 18 stores in SoCal. Knowledgeable and friendly staff, pretty good selection now that the bubble has burst.

You might want to check out http://www.calguns.net. Its the definitive website for our Rebublik's firearms info.

Best

I don't really understand how Butch's shop is paradise?

He makes nice guns, but I used to live near Bozeman where Westley Richards is located. Near Shiloh Sharps and about 20 really great gunsmiths.

Paradise would be someplace like NW Washington near Kesselrings. Greatest gunshop I have ever been in, in my life.

I will second Robert's remarks regarding Fowlers and The Stockade. Rude, little in-depth knowledge beyond the basics, pirates. Lots of $500 dollar guns on sale for $1500.

I will also second Robert's suggestion that you visit Pacific Sporting Arms. They've moved into a new showroom in Azuza. Well worth the drive. It's a tasteful, classy, fine gun, gun room.

If you happen through the Central Coast there is:

Shoot the Moon Outfitters
Bridge’s Sportsmen’s Center
Kelly’s Firearms
Uncle Ed’s Outfitters
Four Season’s Outfitters
Jim’s Ammo Depot
Outdoorsman

More on the tactical side are:
Precision Tactical
Para Bellum Tactical
Atascadero Firearms
Tacti-Cool Guns & Gear
And a few others

You can also pop into the factory at Weatherby, which is just a block away from Hogue.

The most worthwhile is Bridge’s as they carry some better stuff, a few Cooper’s, old Winchesters, etc. and the people are super nice.

In So Cal definitely catch Pacific Sporting and I’ve seen some nice high end shotguns at Oak Tree Gun Club and Triple B Shotgun Range in the past.

If you end up further north I’ve been impressed with the selection at Barnwood Arms, but I haven’t been there for several years.

Berman's in Redlands, J.W. Guns in Riverside. There is/maybe was a nice rifle shop in Palm Springs area, too. Turner's is a bit like Big 5, very retail but better than Big 5. Centerfire Arms in Riverside, seems kind of retail, too, but that could be just me.

I got used to old-and-local rifle shops in Connecticut, places where the proprietor might pull parts out of a bucket behind the counter. Then there was Marlin, where we could get parts right at the factory. Nice, and closer than Numrich...

Kesselrings had 20-30 Dakotas, about the same number of Mark V Weatherbys, about a hundred Beretta shotguns and pallets of M700s in stock.

Plus they had thousands of 2nd hand guns on the floor, and another 40-50 custom rifles from folks like Brownell, Pachmayer, and so on. I saw my first Sukalle and Sedgley there.

Kyler, is Storny's still open?

I have been in Bridges before, neat that it is still open. I remember a photo of Boddington standing next to the used gun rack.

He was nice too, looks like the Rigby shop has now become a porn store and antique shop?

I don't know if Storny moved or passed or what, but I haven't seen him around or heard anything about him for at least 5 years.

Craig still lives in the area so he's in Bridge's now and then. Several of his trophies are in Shoot The Moon Outfitters too.

Norm Bridge is well into his eighties so his son and daughter-in-law run the store, but Norm comes in nearly every day and still does some gunsmithing. He's a terrific guy and still sharper than most people at any age.

Bridge's own the building so they would never let a porn store go in. There are antique stores on both sides of the gunshop and a "PG rated" lingerie store where Rigby used to be.

Norm has been in the same location for at least 40 years, but the building was completely rebuilt from the ground up about 10 years ago.

We're lucky to have such a nice little gun shop in the area.

people seemed to really like Kesselrings. the ATF? not so much

http://seattletimes.com/html/l...gundealeratfxml.html

"Skagit County gun shop may have been worst in U.S. In 2005, federal authorities uncovered a raft of violations at Kesselring Gun Shop that put the public at risk, including not knowing the whereabouts of 2,396 guns. Yet it was eight years before the ATF took away the shop’s firearms license."

Too bad, the place was like walking into a gold mine with the gold still hanging on the sides of the shaft.

I have only ever been in one other store that was close. And it wasn't even 20% of what the Kesselrings had.

That was in Maine, at the Kittery Trading post.

Duncan's Gun works in San Marcos north of San Diego. They have custom guns and walls full of blanks to build a custom on. Many gunsmiths work there. Also regular retail .
Most shops in southern Ca. carry basic retail arms with emphasis on handguns and self defense Ar15 types. Don't pass up Half a day drive to Las vegas especially at the antique /Gun show. Prescott AZ. and Scottsdale Az.
