Lora and I were out changing feed times on some of our spin feeders and checking to see the status of feed in our protein feeders. As we were moving between two different set ups in the pasture I noticed something running thru the brush down in a draw just off the pasture road. At first I thought it was either a deer, doe or fawn, or a turkey. As soon as I got stopped I realized it was a coyote.

By this time it had started up a small rise and had stopped and was standing broadside between two bushes. I put the pick up in park and got my .35 Whelen out the window. The coyote was still standing there but as I was getting into position it put its head down and was getting ready to take off. About that I got the scope on it and when the crosshairs got on its shoulder I fired. I am using 225 grain Barnes "X" flat base bullets in this rifle and it shoot them really well. It was an 85 maybe 90 yard shot and the coyote dropped on the spot.

That should end the debate on whether 35 Whelen is enough gun for coyotes.

Personally I think the 35 Whelen is a little light for coyotes... Big Grin

The last one I shot, a few weeks ago I used a 405 Winchester 1895. Eeker Wink

Randall...Good to see that you are back out there working, instead of goofing off guiding!
Don't look like that coyote likes it much though! Big Grin

I assume you're talking about those little western coyotes ,35 lbs, not the 70 lbs wolf/coyotes found here in NY/PA.These should have a 45-70 for their medicine ! wave BOOM

The one I shot in Texas was a mange critter that might have weighted 25lbs.

The biggest one I have taken in Wis. was 52lbs.

But a 125jhp from my 4 inch 357 did him in at about 10 feet.

Don't know what has happened, but over the past few months, we are not seeing the mangy ones.

Most of the ones we are seeing actually look pretty good pelt wise.
