I wanted to get a Custom Barrel for my T/C Encore in somthing "Everyone Else" doesn't have. I have seen a couple but not too many guys have a T/C in .338win. It will be a 24" heavy barrel (.75")
I had one in .300win, that shot real well, but didn't want a heavy belted mag as my only center fire. I Now have a custom, tappered 26", .270win; so the .338 should complement it well. Sounds like a good N. American, 2 rifle big game battery to me. Now for the 12 week wait, until it comes in.

Mark:

Just out of curiosity, why did't you want a .338 as your only centerfire? It looks like you chose the .270 for that.

Congratulations on your choice of caliber, called "The Alaskan " for good reasons, when introduced in 1958.

There is a fellow that posted some of the ballistics from his brand new .338 barrel, which I think is on the same gun you have. The information is at Shooter's Talk, I believe, along a deer hunting story with his new gun. I will see if I can find the URL and post it here for you to see. It will impress you! ShootersTalk?

I looked for the information, but could not find it under ".338" keyword. Maybe you could find it under another keyword.

kk, I didn't wan't the .300win as my only centerfire so I sold it, mainly because my hunting is mostly limited to whitetale deer, for now anyway. I hope to tag a Elk, Moose, Bear, etc, before I'm done. The .270 was just more inline with my needs "for now". The .338 is for Later! Wich is cool because that will give me time to get used to the rifle and use it in the field on deer, before I head to the mountain so to speak.

What factory ammo have you guys used on deer size game? I was thinking of just sighting in with 200gr Balistic tips, and trying them on whitetales.

Hello Mark,

Congrats on the new barrel, I think that you will like it. I have shot a handful of deer with the 200 NBT, from 100 yards out to just over 200 yards. It performed very well on all of them. These were not factory loads, they were handloads using H4831 powder. Only shot one of them twice, but as it turns out the second shot was wholly unnecessary, both were solid chest cavity hits.

Go for it!

You will never regret that .338. I like mine so much I have gotten rid of my .300 magnums. Either the 180 or 200 gr Ballistic Tip is great for deer and any other small stuff. With any reasonable hit they go down right now. What the 180 and 200 Ballistic Tips can't do the 250 Partition can. The .338 Win Mag can do it all. I have a custom reticle in my scope set to my specific load using the 200 Ballistic Tip. Using this setup I have been able to take Mule Deer at really long range when necessary.
