I'll be hunting the second season rifle Elk. It's been snowing this week and I'm looking for advice on the best roads to access the Flat Tops if it's snowing when we arrrive. I've only hiked in from the south in good weather. I'm concerned about getting a vehicle stuck for the winter. We'll probably be hunting GMUs 24,25,26. We'll be backpacking in. Thanks

Am I to assume you're talking about the Flat Tops Wilderness here in Colorado? If this is the case, you should invest in a Rocky Mountain Huntin' Maps (http://www.huntinmaps.com)for those specific GMU's as well purchase other maps. I personally like the maps that National Geographic has been producing in conjunction with Trails Illustrated they tend to show even better access trails. The Flat Tops is a huge area! you have to figure out which area YOU want to access, because you'll never see all of it in a vehicle, and nothing but a few miles of it on foot! if you're familiar with the southern approach, then I would stay with what you know. The Colorado mountians have been swallowing up hikers this year...kinda weird year for that? Are you familiar with the area? some of it is fairly rugged...and of course you know that we are getting pounded this weekend in the high country, especially the northern and central mountains. which is fine with me, i'm heading up this coming weekend...makes the tracking a little easier! Good Luck!
