Does anyone know of a CRF action for us southpaws other than Dakota or Montana Rifleman? I have tried and tried to get an email responce from Dan at MRC but have not gotten a reply.

I forgot to mention that the action had to be able to handle the 458 Lott. The ruger will not handle the length and the winchester needs some overall improvement before it can be considered as a rifle to stake your life on. But if left with no other choice, it will have to do.

Thanks for the links. That sure is a nice action, but a bit out of my price range. I have a weatherby action ready for the project but I wanted to make damn sure there wasn't a better alternative.

Wait a minute. Color me confused, but are you telling me on one hand the Winchester CRF isn't worthy of a DGR (which I definitely don't agree with), and on the other hand you're going to proceed with a Weatherby action, instead?
This must be one of the older Weatherby's, correct?

Have you seen one of the new Winchester left hand actions? The damn things look like they were finished by a high school kid with a file. The super grade actions are much better but Winchester does not sell them as just an action and to Buy a $2000.00 plus super grade rifle to customize just does not't make sense. I'm not sure how you all came to think so poorly of the Weatherby rifles but mine have provided nothing short of outstanding service. I have owned Remington 700s, Ruger 77s, Sako 75s, Savage 112s, and a host of 98 mausers by different manufactures. The Weatherby rifles have been better than all the rest. The Sako was a fine piece but the ejector broke on me twice and had to be sent back. Every year I hunt someplace for something and at least 50% of the time, the game I'm hunting bites back. The Weatherby rifles have never let me down, always feeding and never failing to fire. I do not use factory ammo in them and I maintain modest pressures to insure reliable feeding. I understand the value of CRF rifles, Thats why I wanted to build the next one with that feature. The Winchester is simply to cheaply made to fill the bill. I was trying to find out if there was a moderately priced alternative, seems there is not.

mr308win, I have sent Dan two emails and I'm still waiting for him to reply. The MRC 1999 LH sound slike just the ticket. I'm a bit worried about the finish and would really like to see one before buying it but that might not be possible. I just wish he would answer my emails. I sent the first one three weeks ago.

I never stated or implied that I think poorly of Weatherby rifles.
My surprise at your mentioning them stems from: 1. You said CRF 2. I thought we were discussing actions, not rifles.

I've got a couple Winchester Classics that are left-handed. One stainless in standard length, chambered in 416 Taylor, the other is blued chambered in 375H&H. Here's a couple pictures...
The 375H&H is an older Super Express version (still CFR/Classic action) and is finished fairly nice. The 416 Taylor is a skiff gun, and "nice" is not a priority.
Anyhow, while either rifle could be made into a 458Lott, the 375H&H would be an easy conversion with a new barrel. At the same time the gunsmith can work out any problems with the rifle.
These aren't for sale, they're just for looking.

Brian, thanks for the pics. That is a wonderful pair you have there. I am headed to Cabelas this weekend, since I didn't go last. Hopefully they have a super express or any of the better grade Winchesters. RSY, forgive me, I thought you were bashing the Weatherby. I mentioned CRF because I wanted the new rifle to have it. The Weatherby rifles I have are all push feed, and just the same as all other push feed rifles, if you short stroke it, you get click instead of BOOM. But I guess if you short stroke a CRF, you get the same thing. Thanks for all the replies and the pics.

Hmmm, LongShotRX, that is not usually like MRC. Maybe Dan has been out of the office?? Did you use his personal mail address?? If this is not the mail address you used, see if you get any joy out of this one (mtrifle@montanarifleman.com). Usually MRC has been really good about replying to mail. Hope you have better luck this time - mike

I've got a blued/walnut left hand Win. 70 CRF chambered in 7mm STW that I bought to rebarrel to a .375H&H (same case length as 7 STW). I haven't done anything with it yet and might consider selling if you're interested.
Might also consider the left-hand Mathieu action -- basically a Mauser action on steroids. Before the Weatherby Mark V was introduced, Weatherby used the Mathieu for its left-hand rifles. The Mathieu requires a magazine block to make it short enough for a 458 Winchester Magnum. Easily long enough for a 458 Lott.
Thanks BW and Hammer. I am going to look at a left hand Supergrade Winchester this weekend. Its stainless and left hand and already chambered in 458 lott. If its finished a great deal better than the standard model 70 in the average gun store, I'll be bringing it home. If not, Spike may be getting a call as Dan still hasn't emailed me back. I will call him at my first chance but work makes that tough for a few days.
