Hunting Mass. trooper accidentally shoots woman
NORTON, Mass. (AP) — An off-duty state trooper who was hunting in southeast Massachusetts shot and wounded a 66-year-old woman who was out walking her two dogs when he mistook her pets for a deer.

The woman was shot in the torso while walking on a wooded path in Norton about 5 p.m. Saturday. Police said the trooper called 911 after realizing he had mistaken the tails of the two retrievers for a deer's tail.

The unidentified woman who lives in Norton was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for treatment. Authorities provided no further information on her condition.

State police on Sunday said investigators determined the shooting was an accident. The name of the trooper, who also lives in Norton, was not released because he faces no charges and no internal investigation.

This crap is out of control. Harsh penalties might make idiot slobs think twice before pulling the trigger. I'm appalled at the lack of response to this criminal act.

And wasbeeman, as a MA trooper he probably pulls in $250k per so she might actually get something.

Wouldn't you love to have that cop protecting you? That is stupidity and incompetence beyond belief. Who knows what that fool is capable of doing while in uniform.

A little harsh, but there is a story about a West Point grad that was killed in a Costco in Las Vegas. Sure looks like a lot of funny stuff happened (ex: the police confiscated the store surveillance tapes and then later said they were unreadable).

The shocking thing is how few cops ever even lose their jobs. In Las Vegas, there have been 153 inquires into police shootings. Guess how many officers were found to be at fault or even responsible? Zero. Guess who does the investigations? The police.

I have been a hunter ed instructor for over ten years.

Be ABSOLUTELY certain of your target AND what's beyond!

So, how difficult is that?

Some of the blame has to be put on the victim for being careless (and stupid) but ultimately the responsibility lies with the one that has their finger on the trigger. You cannot call the shot back

Pure and simple case of not knowing what he/she was shooting at. Pure negligence.

I wouldn't make excuses for the lady, other than her being stupid. She was walking where people hunt during hunting season=stupid. The fault lies with the hunter

Are you fucking kidding me? This guy more than anyone is supposed to understand the ramifications of firing a weapon, and you're blaming the woman? Wow, mind boggling the idiocy of some people.

I believe I stated from the beginning the fault lies with the shooter (more than once) I just think its pitifully stupid to wander in the woods during hunting season, with, apparently no regard for your own safety.
There is a guy that lives down the road from one of my hunting spots that used to do that on purpose because he was anti hunting. I had the local Game Warden speak to him, since it was illegal to interfere with the hunt. He eventually got the idea. I'm just saying it makes no sense to put your life in danger just to walk your dogs. The real fault lies with the shooter, and always does. It is our responsibility as hunters to know what we are shooting at, I don't mean to diminish that, it's what we teach.

People have EVERY right to walk in woods during hunting season. Most people who don't hunt have no idea it is hunting season.

Suppose this woman walked every day. What is she supposed to do...stop walking during hunting season because certain idiots don't take time to check their targets?

The "hunter" should be jailed for a long time. That will put an end to this BS. But then again, I am all for jail time for any accidental death, be it driving while texting, drunk, etc.

really?? a hunter ed instructor for 10 yrs???
how could you EVER begin to look at the victim as bearing any responsibility?
first rule of firing a firearm is?
backstop? wheres the bullet going to end up?
first rule of hunting with a firearm?
POSITIVELY know what you are shooting at!
and as a officer of the law his training should of kept this out of the headlines

I would put no blame on the women but simply say that like defensive driving, wearing hunter orange clothing while out walking in a hunting area is just being safe. The state trooper has no defense in my mind and I am ex law enforcement.

I sure would hate to think that I would have to wear Blaze orange just to feed my stock because hunting season was in......... It does make me wonder if it indeed was an accident...........

Evidently, his hunting license hasn't even been revoked. I just don't see how these asshats get away with negligent assault/murder all the time saying "sorry, I thought they were a deer". If we as hunters don't police these bastards they're gonna sink us faster than the antis ever could.

My wife first told me this story a few days ago and she understood the lady who got shot was on her own property and the trooper, a neighbor who did not have permission to hunt on her property shot her. I don't think law enforcement has a very good record of gun safety. Most who are shot are shot by themselves or another cop. Kenny

Have any of you seen this video going around on the internet.
A man is speaking to a large audience and asks them to partake in an experiment. He asks them to count the number of passes that each team passes the basketball. Its like a competition, the men vrs. the women. He plays the video for them and then ask people how many passes, people respond with their count. He then ask them to raise your hand if you saw anything out of the ordinary.
He then plays the video again and you plainly see a guy in a black gorrila suit walking around the people passing the basketballs. A lot of people in the audience were concentrating so hard to count the passes that they did not see a gorrilla walking around.

The trooper needs to be held responsible and should never be able to hunt again, but because of the human mind these types of accidents will happen.
