He helped establish the "value" of trophy elk by buying all those hunts so that's the price he should pay....along with losing all hunting privileges and spending a good amount of time in County Lockup!

"he relied on locals to tell him he was good to go" laughable at best

it will be interesting to see what the judge determines this individual can & can not do leading up to and during the trial.

I know he also bought the RMEF tag for Pennsylvania. I don't recall the exact situation and wording, but I believe due to thisgentleman's individual's past poaching/game violations then him buying the PA tag they changed some verbiage around so one could not use the tag if they are under investigation/convicted? of game violations.

so HOPEFULLY this judge puts a freeze on this guy and it will ripple into his being out of a hunt in PA, NM, and wherever else he has already spent the $$ to hunt it is obvious a fine will not hurt this individual but if you take away his privileges that may change his actions ini the future

Bullwinkle shooting trial moved to Sept. 9

Julia Martinez

Ellensburg Daily Record Updated Aug 12, 2016

Kittitas County District Court Judge Jim Hurson this week denied a motion to dismiss the case of a Salkum man accused of shooting a well-known local elk named Bullwinkle.

Tod Reichert, 76, is charged with second-degree unlawful hunting of big game, a gross misdemeanor, which can carry the possibility of fines and a two-year suspension of his hunting privileges. He has pleaded not guilty.

The elk was something of a celebrity in the Fairview District near Ellensburg, and was known to wander around hay fields and yards. The case has attracted statewide attention.

Reichert is accused of shooting the elk in a field where it was not permitted, in an area closed to hunting branch-antler elk.

Stephen Hormel, Reichert’s attorney, asked the court to dismiss the case on July 26 on the basis that there was no resource available to Reichert that would have led him to know where he was prohibited from hunting with his raffle permit. That motion was denied on Tuesday.

Hormel filed another motion to dismiss the case the same day. The state has charged the key witness in Reichert’s defense, David Perkins, with second-degree aiding and abetting, or as a principal, to unlawful hunting. Perkins was Reichert’s disabled hunting companion. Hormel said the courts action was prosecutorial mismanagement in the court filing.

Hormel writes that the act of charging Perkins prevents Reichert from using Perkins as his primary witness. According to court documents, Perkins was going to testify that he called the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife to obtain permission to harvest the bull.

Other local witnesses include Cody Carollo, Brian Roberts and Ron Axman.

Charging Perkins means that Reichert must either waive his right to a speedy trial or waive his right to have his key witness at the trial, both of which Hormel writes is unacceptable given the circumstances.
Perkins is scheduled to be arraigned on Aug. 15.

A pre-trial hearing for the Reichert case is scheduled for Aug. 18. The jury trial has been moved to Sept. 9.

So...here's a question. Is he an unethical (in that he shot a wild, roadside attraction), ignorant hunter in that he really didn't know he couldn't shoot a bull there. Or did he KNOW and chose to shoot it anyway????

Why buy tags if you're going to poach it? Seems like he'd spend the money to get someone to help him load the elk up and run.
His prior certainly won't help his case.

I do have to say I hate seeing citizens talk about wild animals as if they are pets, or tame'ish. That really loads the anti's guns.

Hunting in Africa is an adventure. The number of variables involved preclude the possibility of a perfect hunt. Some problems will arise. How you decide to handle them will determine how much you enjoy your hunt.

Just tell yourself, "it's all part of the adventure." Remember, if Robert Ruark had gotten upset every time problems with Harry
Selby's flat bed truck delayed the safari, Horn of the Hunter would have read like an indictment of Selby. But Ruark rolled with the punches, poured some gin, and enjoyed the adventure.

Personally I don't understand the prevailing fetish for antlers

And I've always seen them as something MORONS go nuts over.

WHY? they do nothing to fill the Chili or stew pot...

Now as for calling an Elk "Bullwinkle", the morons that named him that obviously never watched the cartoon, "Bullwinkle" was a Moose!

And on top of that is the insidious mind warping anthropromorphisation of animals that fuels the antis...

Leading antis to calling deer hunters "Bambi killers"

Where are the PETA representatives calling us all "Porky killers" for the bacon or sausage with our eggs for breakfast....

If I provoke you into thinking then I've done my good deed for the day!

While I certainly do not agree with his ethics and think that the (seemingly illegal)shooting of a roadside attraction completely dishonors the animal and sport....he's not walking on a "loop hole". I'd call it a flaw, one that'll get fixed for the next a$$wipe that pulls this.

I doubt they will appeal. Judges don't really like to over rule each other unless it's something they feel really strong about. An elk, named after a moose????

About 30 states (it could be more now) have an anti-poaching compact that denies someone found guilty of certain violations in one member state from hunting in another member state.

Reichert could be out the money he paid for auction tags in other states if he is found guilty in Washington.

I agree 100%.

In most of the world the animal we call "moose" is called "elk." (You have to excuse me, I'm a trivia geek.)

You're closer than you thought about PETA. In a campaign PETA compared eating bacon to eating 'Babe', a newer and sappier cartoon pig character than Porky. They also linked eggs to being an abortionist. I am convinced that veg*anism is a manifestation of mental illness.

44 states are members of the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact. Legislation to join the compact is pending in 4 other states. At this time to only states that are definitely not members are Nebraska and New Jersey. I hope the dope that shot Bullwinkle has to hunt for his next elk in Camden.
