Jan,

Good luck in the hunt. I really like the way you do it over there.

I suspect that given your intelligent management practices and emphasis on sport and meat rather than antler size will result in many generations of enjoyment.

Though I have spent some time in Norway, (not hunting) I do not have a really good idea of the range of weights that a mature Moose might have in your part of the world.

I have Moose tracks (cow and calf) all over my yard, as is usual for this time of year in Alaska.

Norma you say? No, I don't know her but if she hunts I'm interested.
Actually, I'm going hunting with friends from a town north of Umea. Should be fun and hopefully I'll see MOOSE!

You lucky bastards in Sweden!!
We here in Norway have to wait to 5th October for our moosehunt, but i'll have a week with some fine roedeer -hunt first, with my two wirehaired dachhounds. And that's often just quite as fun as mooshunting.
I usually shoots 2-5 moose, and 2-5 roedeer every autumn.
I have before used 308 win with a 180 grs oryx on the moose, and that's works perfect. A wonderful mushroom, often in skin on the opposite side of the animal, or if it's a lung-shoot it goes right trough. I have also used a 460 wby with 400 grs Woodleight bullet on the moose and he died of that to!!! But there was no bullet in the skin!!(simply a big hole)
This year I'm going for the .416 Taylor using 340 grs Woodleigt bullets in approx. 2250 ft/s. i belive that's a fine "stopper" for the moose. If not, I'll keep the 460 handy!!
If the 460 wby don't stop it.......i'll walk quietly back to my car, and go home. Then i'll start working on my 50 BMG for the next season.
When it comes to the roedeer-hunting i always use my old ( and UGGLY) BRNO 300 Combi.(shootgun barrel in 12ga, and the rifle barrel in 7x57R.)
For that rifle i use a 139 grs Hornady SP bullet, and that works perfect for me.
I*m working on a new 338 Ultra Mag. but i don't think i'll have enought money to finish it before this year's hunt. But next year..........!!!!
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR HUNT, JAN!!

Shoot well, and hit hard.

A Swedish Moose bull can range in weight from 200kg to 550kg (500 to 1200lb).
The biggest last year in our huntingclub was 310kg (no head, skin and 4 days hanging). It was a 25 pointer and scored Gold on the trophy.

Tombo21, unfortunately Norma's not a girl, just the ammo factory. I'm not complaining though, girls are found in more places than moose

Hej Tombo21

I'm a wildlife biologist, and you will be hunting right in the area where I have lot of moose with radio collars on them. Let me know if you bag one of them! I can then let *you* know where it was born, who its mother was....

Cheers from Ume i Vsterbotten!

It seemes like my home town Ume and its hunting grounds is getting known around the world

Tombo!
I think the people of nset will be proud when you call it a town Its more like a willage. Ume is the "big" town about 70 km south and here in Ume the population is 100000......

I do moose hunting outside a willage called Robertsfors quite close to nset. We have got one moose so far after three days of hunting a good friend shot it with his .416 Taylor loaded with 340 gr. Woodleighs. The bullet performed perfect and i can really recomend it for moose. The moose was a young bull, probably only two years. Seven points and 211 kgs. dressed. We have seen lots of moose but the moose dog we was using was ill so we couldnt use it

I started the hunting seson at land islands with some roe deer hunting first weekend in Sep. I got three bucks the fisrst day!! Two was really decent sixpointers (in the morning) and one small spiker (in the eavening). I didnt se more bucks the following two days but the smile on my face was still ther tru the remaning days of the hunt

Hey guys! mabye me John, Jan, Tombo and all the other people that seemes to go to Ume for moose in oct can get together for a beer some night. John, isnt "krhuset" avalible? Its remade this last spring (I think) and I would like to try the bar out

We will have a go at the mooses next weekend and I hope to get one then

Good hunting, Stefan.

I know Anaset is a village. Robertsfors is a town. I have a friend who works in the Aluminum extruder in Robertsfors. I have been to Umea a number of times. In fact, I took the last Tax-free ferry from Vaasa to Umea. I do business with a company up near Skelleftea so I almost always fly into Umea. It's a nice city. I am not familiar with "karhuset".
John, why do I want to know a Mooses mother? Am I expected to send flowers?

Something funny.... I realized I am more vain than I ever thought I could be. I was packing some winter clothes for hunting and realized they all looked ragged and smelled like wood smoke. So I went out and bought myself some new hunting attire for hunting in Sweden. Couldn't see dragging a bag of tattered clothing 6500 km. Jeez....I feel like a girl.

Tombo.

I work at the airport in Ume, mabye we meet when you come here in Oct

Il better explain the term "krhuset" a bit closer. My english isnt good enough to know the proper name. Anyway here goes a atempt This is a place where the students at the "Forrestry uneversity" (probably totally wrong name in english to) here in Ume arrange meetings and partys. John P Ball works at the uneversity so mabye he could arrange a meeting at the "krhuset". I have been there at a "gun night" where myselfe and some other benchresters and gun nuts talked about what makes a gun accurate. Mats and jpb was also there that night.

Bring your old and ragged clotes!! Well used clothes and worn out boots is the sign of a experienced hunter.

Welcome to the best moosehunting in the world!!

Stefan.

Let me know if there's going to be any activity in Ume, I'll tag along even if I'm not too found of beer. And not much of a moosehunter either.
I walk or bicycle just by the "krhus" every day on the way to work.

And I think Stefan can claim part in a moose calf, think he had loaded the ammo for it (Ronnys).

Hey Mikke!

Its never to late to change I think you could be trained to be a good moosehunter as well as a decent beer drinker

Yes Im the ammo supplyer for Ronnys .358 Norma Mag. The calf was taken with a 250 gr. Woodleigh Weldcore SN. This is a good bullet for moose, not as hard and tuff as the Swift A-frame for example. The Woodleigh bullets expands relayable in moose.

A "accuratereloading gettogether" would be great fun! The time scedule is quite tuff for me by the time the meeting could take place. Im leaving for New Zeland and the benchrest world ch. (and some hunting) at Oct. 18.....

Stefan.

Just came back from a quick "dusk hunt" for moose. I probably let a chanse of my liftime slip away this morning...... I had a WERY large moose bull at a field at about 120 m. When i discowered him he was facing me head on and I only had a 6,5 calibre rifle (we was actually out for calfs). I hesitaded for a moment and then he got wind and turned and ran.

Grrrr, I really regret not trying a shot from head on in the neck. Its hard to say how big the antlers was but they had very nice showels and at least 15 points, probably more. Heads here in Sweden seldom get more than 20-25 points.

I got a 8 pointer last sat. so that kind of ease the pain a bit, but not much

Stefan.

I admire your restraint Stefan, many would have taken that shot. I really prefer bigger rifle's as I get older for critter's such as moose, Elk...ect

Do you own a 3006 ?, or bigger ? I know the 6.5 is a goodie, and will put moose steaks in the freezer, but with my .338win I would take a frontal like that.

I just love Blueberry fed moose meat to much....have a great hunt.........10

I useally use my BRNO ZG47 9,3X62 for moose. The reson for using the 6,5 rifle this day was that we was out at dusk and the 6,5 is topped with a helia 8X56....

There is probably taken more moose here in Sweden with 6,5X55 rifles than all other cartridges all together so it works for the Swedish moose, no doubth. I dont really promote it as a moose round though. I like a bit moore punch for the difficult shots that come sooner or later.

The 8 pointer last sat was taken with the 9,3X62 and Noslers new 18,5 gram part. The shot went thru behind the shoulders so the test of the bullet was not so tuff

Stefan.

Don't feel too bad. I passed on a huge Elk a couple years back because I couldn't pick him up properly in my scope during a snowstorm. I don't want to wound an animal, I want to kill it. If I don't have the shot, I don't take it. You did good.

Thanks guys for comforting me

Its only about 12 h since this happened and I can still se his big antlers swing thru the scope when he turned away.....

You are right of corse, its more important to go for a clean cill rather than take a chanse for a big thropy.

Last time i had a chanse on a bull like this was 1988..... i wonder how long i have to wait for next one

Tombo!
He was going in the direction of Lvnger when he was running for the woods Its only about 25 km to go, he mabye are there allready catching for breath

I have a shooting buddy that come from Jmtland but lives here in Ume. He is a moosehunter to but i have not talked to him since the hunting started. The moose hunting in Jmtland is useally very good. There have been shot many really big bulls in Jmtland.
