I have decided to pursue the SCI North American 29. Does anybody know if the Free Range American Buffalo in West Texas count in this collection. I have a combo Desert Mule Deer/free range Buffalo booked and i was hoping it will count towards the goal. Thanks for your help. W.

I have a buddy trying for the same thing and he researched the hell out of it. He needed up going to a place here in CO to get his but I'll ask him what he knows. Pm me the name of the place and I'll let you know what he says. If it were me though, I'd consider going to the Armanderis in NM for your buffalo

Since when does SCI care if its "free range" ?

The north american 29 must all be free range.

Then don't overlook Utah's Henry Mt.s and Wyo's buff hunting. Is anything inside bob-wire free range?

Please keep this post on topic. I personally like SCI, and will always be a member. For note, I have never shot an animal behind a fence and never will. There are many animals that live in texas that are not behind a fence. Open your mind a little and you'll be a happier camper. Thanks, W.

Just in case you were wondering, the only animal in the collection that my be free range or estate due to the many unkowns, is the American Bison. I will shoot mine free range in West Texas. Thanks so much, W

Wouldn't trying for one at Custer State Park in S.D. qualify? How does SCI determine "Free Range". Not trying to start a pissing contest, as it is your project and you accomplish it however you want to. I would just like to know what qualifies an animal as "Free Range"? Is it the size of the property or height of the fence? I am taking care of 17 buffalo on a 680 acre low fence(5 or 6 strand barbed wire) pasture and am simply curious as one day this group will have access to 1K acres and we have discussed offering hunts for excess animals in the future. According to SCI rules, what constitutes or is considered "Free Range" on these animals? Even the rocks don't last forever.

I dont know what SCI considers Free Range excatly. PERSONALLY, I considera a free Range animal to live with no fences or the fences can be jumped or gone under. Basically there is nothing holding them contained. I will be hunting a 165,000 acre property that the buffallo and desert Mule Deer live on. The south texas Nilgai hunt I did this past january was 175,000 acres without a high fence on it, where they could come and go, as they go under the cattle fence, so I know this large of a property with out a high fence is possible. Especially in West Texas. Thanks so much, W.

I meant on your NA 29. No chance of keeping it on topic once the word "fence" was entered into the lexicon. How are you doing so far in your quest? GWB

Thanks so much. I really appreciate yoy asking. I have the whitetail, coastal black bear, mt lion, and alligator. I am booked to 2015 which i should be up to 13, with the mt goat, pronghorn, rocky mt mule deer, rocky mt elk, buffalo, desert mule deer, coastal grizzly bear, wolf, and columbia blacktail. On a side note by 2014 i should also have all the huntable cats of NA with a bobcat hunt and a lynx hunt to go with my mt. Lion i got in 2011. Thanks again W

Sounds like a worthy goal. Best of luck and good hunting! GWB PS: I usually don't watch the hunting channels but was doing some reloading last night. Happened on a guy that was intent on hunting the NA 29 with an iron-sighted 30-30 Winchester. Are you using a particular rifle or a combo? GWB

Thanks!! Nothing special like that. I am mostly a rifle hunter though. Some may be taken with a muzzy depending on when the hunt takes place. Thanks again. W

The most difficult part for some of them is getting the permits. This is especially true for the sheep. After more than 50 years of hunting, I'm not even 1/2 way there, and doubt I'll ever come close to completing the slam because of the permits AND the money it requires to hunt some of them, i.e. polar bear, muskox. Plus, I'm getting too old to chase some of them up and down steep mountains. I do have the slam of turkeys, though, with several Merriams, easterns, Rio Grandes and one Osceola and one Gould's. The ones in bold are already in my trophy rooms. Is this the same list SCI uses? 1-Alaska Brown Bear 2-Black Bear- several - AZ & BC 3-Grizzly Bear 4-Polar Bear 5-Bison 6-Barren Ground Caribou - AK 7-Central Canada Barren Ground Caribou - NWT 8-Mountain Caribou - n. Ignore my question. I found the SCI list, which differs a bit from the one I posted. Here is SCI's version of the NA game anilmals. There are 38 that qualify, but 29 of the 38, including at least three sheep, is the number needed for the award. ❏ Jaguar* ❏ Cougar (or puma, or mtn. lion) ❏ Alaskan brown bear ❏ Grizzly bear (common or b.g.) ❏ Polar bear ❏ Continental (Inland) black bear ❏ Coastal (Pacific) black bear ❏ Gray wolf ❏ Atlantic walrus ❏ American bison ❏ Muskox (b.g. or greenland) ❏ American mountain goat ❏ Dall sheep ❏ Stone sheep ❏ Rky Mtn or CA bighorn sheep ❏ Desert bighorn sheep** - North Baja - South Baja - Sonoran - Nelson ❏ Pronghorn ❏ Rocky Mountain elk ❏ Roosevelt elk ❏ Tule elk ❏ Alaska-Yukon moose ❏ Western Canada moose ❏ Eastern Canada moose ❏ Shiras moose ❏ Alaska-Yukon b.g. caribou ❏ Central Canada b.g. caribou ❏ Arctic Islands caribou ❏ Mountain caribou ❏ Quebec-Labrador caribou ❏ Woodland caribou ❏ Rocky Mountain mule deer ❏ Desert mule deer ❏ Columbia black-tailed deer ❏ Sitka black-tailed deer ❏ Baja black-tailed deer ❏ White-tailed deer ❏ Coues white-tailed deer ❏ American alligator *Darted or Record Book entry before 1972 The jaguar is not required but can be substituted for another category. **Only one sub-species allowed Tony Mandile - Author "How To Hunt Coues Deer"

GSC/OVIS has a different list and they all have to be free range. The Boone and Crockett club has a different list and they all have to be free range, and actually part of a state game departments hunting program. So the elk and deer on Santa Rosa Island in California were taboo.

I'll hold down the bottom of the list at 5 so far but i was almost the youngest person in Texas to complete the Texas slam in one year however a 10 yr old girl beat me to it the same year. I wish i got started on my big game trips earlier than i did. I am 35 years old and was/am working on the north american duck collection. It has taken me to many wonderfull places in this great country i have 4 left to collect for my trophy room out of the 32 huntable species. i went on a coastal black bear hunt with jim shockeys outfit in 09 and have been going full bore on big game trips since then. ( i have hunted deer since 94). Luckily my wife ALLOWS me to go on 3-4 trips a year. I hope whatever club or organization people follow for rhe collection or just follows for fun conpletly enjoys themselves and has the best of luck. I dont collect slams or animals to prove anything to anybody but myself. Thanks for letting me share. W.

Good luck to you Woodsie. I’m about the same age as you. I was going for my pig slam (inter circle) and elk slam, but changed it and made up my own “slams”. Now I just want to shoot a 4x4 mule deer in every western state, a pronghorn in every western state and a cow elk slam. As soon as I draw this tule cow tag I should be able to check that one off.

The only other critter I've hunted on the first list I posted was an inland grizzly. In 1990 or so, I hunted both grizzly and black bears in BC. I passed on two small boars that were between 6' & 7' but never saw the "shooter" I wanted. I did kill two blacks that were bigger than the two griz I passed on, though. The green hide of the largest measured 8'6" nose to tail, and the other was 7'3". Another member of AR - RM007 - was on that hunt and was one of the ones doing the measuring. In 2004, I killed another in that same area that went 7'6". AND...as luck would have it, my son and I had the pleasure of watching a big male griz feeding at 100 yds. from us for more than 20 mins. Neither of us had one of the limited number of permits for the area, however. We later saw a big sow with her cub, as well. RM007 on the right and the late Roy Pattison on the left. The big one before field dressing The big one (r) and the "little one." Both received a 225-gr. dose from a .338. This is the one from 2004. The rug on the wall is an AZ bear. At 70 yrs. old now, the only others on the list that seem realistically possible for me in the future are the desert bighorn and free-range bison in AZ. Both hinge on drawing a permit, however. I have 21 BPs for sheep and about 15 for bison. For bison, I simply buy a BP for the fall hunt, which is for the captive herd on Raymond Ranch and usually only offers either yearling or cow permits. I then apply for an actual bull permit for the free-range hunt on the North Kaibab, which takes place in the spring. For many years, AZ has had what originally started as the "Arizona Big Ten." All of them MUST be taken in AZ. The original list included: lion mule deer Coues deer elk pronghorn javelina (big game in AZ) black bear Merriams' turkey (big game in AZ) Desert bighorn bison Because of the permit thingie, I lack the desert sheep and bison on this list, as well. Today, after successful introductions that have led to hunting seasons, two more can be added --the RM bighorn and Gould's turkey. Since my Gould's was killed in Sonora, Mex. and not AZ, I also lack these two. Another that might be in my future is a sitka deer hunt somewhere in AK to complete my NA deer collection. That one is quite iffy, though, depending on opportunity and/or expendable income. Tony Mandile - Author "How To Hunt Coues Deer"

What Tony didn't tell you is that he shot both those super bears the first evening in camp. If I remember correctly seems to me there were 8 of us in camp and we took 18 bears. I suggest you go to Canada and do it right. www.yukonsheep.com If you care that the animal is not importable, you can buy auction tags for the Henry Mountains for only a bit more than Tim Charges in The Yukon. If that is too much, then start putting in for the Custer tag. This hunt is still not ideal in my mind but much better than shooting something in a feed lot. If none of these options are acceptable, then start putting in for a tag in Utah, Wyoming, Alaska or Arizona....but be prepared to wait a couple decades.

Tony: I have seventeen of the original 29 North American animals and completed my Arizona Big Ten in 1994 after 39 consecutive years of applying for a desert sheep tag. At age 76, though, my days of going out of state and out of country to hunt are over. I will continue to hunt elk near our cabin (there were six in the meadow across the road at sundown tonight) whenever I can draw a tag, but the odds are against me. Bill Quimby
