I get 2,525 fps with the Nosler 250 grain partition from my 22 inches barrelled .35 Whelen. I sight it in 3 inches high at 100 yards. It's on at 200 yards and around 10 inches low at 300 yards. Does this make it a practical 300 yard rifle? Last week on the next too last day of my Shiras Moose hunt in Wyoming's Bridger Nat'l Forest, I found a decent bull at 8 Am in a park that we had already lazered at 320 yards long. The bull was 20 yards from the far end and I was able to get app. 20 yards from the other end. Resting against a tee trunk and holding just slightly high I hit him 4 times in four shots. First dead on, then as he ran to the right, then again as he turned dead on and lastly as he tried to make the forest to the left. So ....the .35 Whelen IS a practival 300 yard rifle. As far as I'm concerned. that's just been proven again.

If you sight 2.75in. high at 100yds. you'll have a MPBR of 250 yds. for 6in. vital area. If you're a little better with holdover and range estimation, you can go 4.25in. high at 100yds. and it'll shoot clean to 300yds. without a problem.

Rich,

Seems the 35 whelen has a solid reputation from those who've used it, the only one's who doubt it's performance are the arm chair balisticians who spew sd, bc and BS.

Rich,
I shoot a .338-06 w/ sim. ballistics. I don't think drop is the problem, I think it is having enough velocity to give good expansion. For me, the .338-0/.35 Whelen are 300yd max. on big game like elk & moose. You could probably tag a deer out as far as you could hit, a .34/.36 cal. hole thru & thru should do the job.

Rich,

I popped my bull last year at 290 yds with 225 grain NP's at 2600 fps in my .338-06, again pretty similar. I have shot my rifle out to 400 yds and the required holdover at 300+ yds is not that great. My self imposed max range is 400 yds unless its wounded and I much prefer to shoot under 300 yds. But with the .338-06 at that 300 yd range I surely do not feel undergunned or handicapped in any way.

Just look at the speeds .35 caliber provides with heavy bullets. Wonderful efficiency .. great cartridge. I've taken game at close to 300 yards with my BLR in .358 Win, using the 225 grainers with no problem. At Whelan velocities, especially on the larger, heavier species, it's routine.
