Any opinions on the Merkel 96k? I am thinking of ordering one in 20x20x9.3 and having it regulated for slugs aswell.
Thanks

Where is the "green with envy" face...?

Trying to decide between a standard drilling and a double rifle drilling. Both have their strong points.

DR drillings are expensive, heavy, and somewhat less useful, IMO. I LOVE them!!!

get the dr drilling in 450 straight over a 20 ga 3" with a qd scope.

then sell off all your surplus rifles and keep one double shotgun for bird hunting.

or a drilling if you prefer that for birds & woods shooting in the wilds of alaska.

I agree. Do you have any experience with the full length large cal. inserts?

harms,
I recently bought a Krieghoff Optima (Quadro in the US) doublerifle drilling (DRD) in 2x 9.3x74R and 20/76. In the 20GA barrel I can also slip in a 22LR insert barrel. This works very well on grouse and while trapping on my trapline.
I took a long and hard look at the Blaser D99Duo/Trio, the Merkel DRD (also the new, light version), the Mathelon, and finally the Krieghoff.
All is, of course, much a matter of taste.... I had friends in Sweden telling me that some users of recently made Merkel drillings were not too happy with the quality. Another friend/gundealer in Germany complained about the Blaser drilling and the complaints that he gets. I looked at the Mathelon at the IWA Show in Germany, very nice gun, but it has a very "simple" safety that did not make me comfortable.
Last is the Krieghoff. Perhaps my doublerifle drilling is heavy at 9 lbs, but I am used to guns 8-10lbs, all of mine are. And the Krieghoff is solid, I liked it . Soo.... now I have one, "built to order" by Krieghoff, with game scene engraving and select wood. It carries a 1.5-6x42 scope in QD mount. I am planning to also get a Docter II Sight (or Burris Fast Fire) red dot sight for it. In the 20/76 tube I might later fit a full length 7x65R or a 30-06 insert barrel for even more versitility where I hunt. But it would make the gun heavier by about 1 lb. Everything is a comprimise.
All in all, a formidable gun for NW North America.

What TOMO said! Wink That would be hard to beat for all your needs in just two guns.

Harms: If you get one, please post a full report. I have been looking at one also, same as you 20x20x9.3. I think I want the shotgun barrels on top, unlike my favorite Maker Blaser with the D99.
