Hi
how is the accuracy when shooting rifled slugs in both shotgun barrels of a drilling? are these guns are regulated for using brenneke or slugs in both shotgun barrels?
all the best

In my limited experience, it varies. I expect to be able to hit a 6" pie plate at 50 yds.....much better than that is a bonus. Best to try a selection of ammo so that you can decide which one is best for the gun.

7, 8 or 9.3 mm, with a slug and shot makes a drilling a pretty capable weapon. But each barrel has its limitations.

I would say it would be like a shotgun,
try it and see. It's the only way you will find out.

I had a Greener that was deadly accurate with
Slugs.

I agree, you have to try each one. Some were regulated for slugs and some weren't, but usally just the right bbl. was regulated if any. That way it would be your second shot after the rifle bbl...

thanks for replies.
I thought using the drilling for hunting wounded boars in the thick cover and i do not concider buckshots as a good option a drilling loaded with one 9,3 or 8 mm backed by a couple of brenneke or rifled slug sounds great, but it depends to the gun if it can deliver good accuracy with shotgun barrels at short distance from a few yards to 40 yards+. if i could have both barrels shooting very close at this distance , then it is a great choice.

I think you will find that up to 40 yards you will be on target unless the drilling is a really cheap, crap one but you don't see too many drilling's that are not well made.

Also, they would have hard to regulate the barrels pretty well to get the 2 shotgun one's shooting well as well as the rifle one so I would say you should be OK.

Give it a go and let us know how you go.

HI
I do not actually own a drilling and planing to buy one and it is why i asked this question, maybe i can get an answer from guys with experience in shooting their drillings with rifled slugs and know about their results.

I shoot slugs out of my JP Sauer sidelock 12/12/8x57JR. It is super effective out to 35 yards, which is the max distance I use slugs. Mine shoots about a 3" group at 25 yds. Past 35 yards, I use the 8x57. I use Federal Tru-Ball slugs as I have found them to be the most accurate and consistent.

Hope this helps. Mike

This might be of some help. I shoot Brenneke Black Magic slugs out of my Zoli combi and I followed some advice I got on selecting slugs.

Brenneke makes five types of slugs that are recommended for smooth bore guns that I was able to order in the USA. I bought a couple of boxes of each and tried them in my gun. All shot acceptabily especially the Black Magic slugs which put 5 rounds into under three inches at 100 yards.

You may find that one brand will "regulate" with your drilling at some distance and give you usuable groups.

I was very surprised that the different loads from the same manufacturer would preform so differently, varying in both group size and point of impact comsiderabily.

As a note I found the Federal slugs horrible both in terms of accuracy and preformance in my gun with a 12+ inch group at 50 yards and a sticky action I assume from very high pressure!

Also, make bloody sure the scope mounts will handle the recoil, if you use a scope. Standard 8x48 screws may work---for a while... 8x40 are better but I went to 10x32 after the 8x48 ripped out on my rib mount.

I have several drillings, and a combo gun.
My wifes favorite hunting gun is her drilling.

Shooting slugs in a drilling is just like shooting slugs in any shotgun...

You need to do do some testing to see what shoot best in your barrels.

Like many I am not a big fan of buckshot for big game...
However last year I shot a deer with 20ga Federal 3" No2 buck at around 34 to 35 yards.
One round killed the deer it was facing me.

I was impressed how deep the buckshot penetrated, and how much damage it did...

From my having experimented with shotguns and slugs I find that a true cylinder bore shoots best and some full choked shotgun barrels can be very poor throwing the slug far away from anything looking like a target!

I no longer have a drilling, but my 8x57r/16 shoots Brenneke Gamemaster 20 ga slugs with a Guage Mate adapter to POA out to 75 yards, after that gravity tends to screw things up. They are on target at 25, about 2" high at 50 yards, then back down to POA at 75. Federal, Remington and Winchester 16's go all over the place in that gun.

Black Fly,
does this Gauge Mate adapter work in my old drilling in 16/65(2 1/2 in)?

Farmer John,
Yes, they fit 2.5" chambers. I use them in both 2 3/4 and 2.5 inch chambers. They work well, and accuracy with the slugs finally gave me the versatility that I dreamed about when I first got into drillings and combos. Their only draw back is that they donot slip easily in and out of the chambers in my guns (they might in other guns) and the shells tend to stick a bit in the guagemate, too. I got mine from Joe at the JMAR Enterprises. His website is the DrillingHotline.

Mine are silver, kind of a brushed stainless steel, not real smooth. I didn't know they made gold. The ones I have, have a slit their full length. Not sure of the purpose, but I think it has to do with allowing them to fit the short chamber.
