3 barrels, what would be your dream combo?
Mine is a combo called "büchsflintenwaldläufer"
a gauge and a riflebarrel under a smaler riflebarrel.
The SxS are 16 or 20 gauge and a 8,5x63R under a 6x62R frères barrel.
Very exotic, ammo hard to find but a dram.
Would start learning reloading.

And yours??

I never saw a combo like this in hunters hands, I never had one in my hands, I only saw them on pictures, but for my is clear, one day I must have one.
unfortunatelly there is only one gunsmith for this type om combo - TJF in Suhl and the price is horrible.

I now have mine. It is an Otto Geyger-Berlin in 16 & 9,3X74R PLUS 20ga 3" & 243Win. The 16/9,3 has a 1.2X4 Schmidt & Bender in swing mount, and the 20/243 has a 1.5X6 S&B in claw mounts. Have a Kreighoff 22mag insert on the way for the 16ga set.

Thanks, Dale Nygaard! (He found all for me)

For a drilling I'd want a 20 bore, 7x57R, and a 22 long rifle rimfire, technically a Bockdrillinge I suppose.

For a Büchsflinten I fancy a 12 x 9.3x74R Cape Gun, with hammers, of course.

When we start talking about the Bockbüchsflinten & Bockdoppelbüchsen is when I get into serious trouble...no end to the potential combinations. This is the only category in which I've actuall spent any money. Mine is a 12 over 223 Valmet 412.

A vierling would allow me two shot barrels, a centerfire, and a rimfire. But then a fella wouldn't need any other gun, and we can't have that...

I live not far from Dale and was planning on asking him to locate me a 16x16 over 9.3x74R.

Pix as soon as I figure out how... Confused I only have the ones from Dale and need to take more. I'll be shooting chucker with it tomorrow as an invite by a tribal chairman on a small reservation north of here. I'll take some pix and post them.

Dale is the real deal. I've dealt with him before. I have him looking for a field gun in 12/9,3X74R...nothing fancy. I've tried out all six barrels of this set and am... dancing

12g, 12g, 7x57R, with a 22lr insert.
That would cover just about everything I would hunt now.
Maybe a 12g, 7x57R, 7x57R set of BBls for those days after deer... dancing

My guess would be a 12/76 and a 9,3x74 R for a drilling, that would make it possible to have one rifle and to use it here and there on various hunting.

I'm going to say after a little thought, 20/76mmX9.3x74 over 22 Highpower Savage. I could try the usual shot targets and 12 ga slug for backup with the 9.3 for larger game. The shot and 22 Highpower for varmint calling and cast in the .22 for small game like squirrel. Then there would be a 12/76X 450-400 "3 over the hipower.......... Packy

Okay here is my dream drilling:

It has 2x20gauge with magnum chambers. I would rather want 12-70, but then I think you get a weight problem. The rifle barrel should be 7x75R. I want 2 triggers, one for the riflebarrel and one for the shotgunbarrels. I safety, push it forward, then both triggers are free. Forward trigger for the shotgun, the back one for the riflebarrels. I do not need a selector for the shotgunbarrels.

I want extractors, no ejectors. I just can't stand flying cases..

The choke should be cylinder and 1/4 choke. The stock should be more or less straight, no swine backs for me... I can't stand the look of those bavarian designs. It should fit me like my shotgun..

I would put a aimpoint in some kina QR mount on it. Maybe some scope as well, to see if it works.

I should weigh about 3.5kg in all...

How about a best quality Heym, Streitmier, Fuchs, Fanjoz, side lock with covered in red stags, wild boar, and Capercallie. With a big Schmidt and Bender 3-12x56 scope on a rail mount.

With full on marble cake root wood for a stock, some subtle stock carving, and fish scale checkering.

Might as well go whole hog.

Probably going to buy a Luxus Blaser D99 Duo in 9.3x74 9.3x74 and 20 gauge for $5500, and call it a day though.

It is nice to dream!

I already have it...

It's a Krieghoff 16-16 - 8x57jrs... I have slide in sleeves to shoot 20ga. ammo in it, two Krieghoff insert bbls in 22lr and 22 Win mag,. interchangeably choke tubes, claw mount with B&L 1.5x6 scope, color case and rust blued metal, third fasner, set trigger, swamped rib, side clips, naturally grafted English/Bastone custom stock & checkering and many more options, like sub chambers ect...

"If" i was haveing one built today, the only changes i'd make from this one are, 26" bbls, a second scope in claw mounts and "maybe" have it chambered in 7x65R?

This one weighs 7 pounds, i wouldn't care if the next one was 6-3/4 pounds... Smiler

Le-mee-see, what did i forget???

Both of my drillings are perfect as well and I'd have to think really hard to choose between them.

My 8x57x16x16 Emil Diemb of SUHL is the better quality of the two but I find that I use the Sauer 30-06x12x12 more often.

Both would be better with a einstecklauf .22 hornet or rimfire and the Sauer I'd like to do away with the beavertail forearm and have a splinter forearm in it's place. but to make them just perfect 22" barrels would be great.

I have a bbf with 22" barrels in 16 x 6.5x57 and I really love it.

I have my dream drilling.
Actually my wife and I both have them.

"They" both are Sauer 12x12x30-06.
Both have a scope fitted in claw mounts.
The Sauer handles like a fine quail gun.
They kill ducks and turkeys just fine as well.

The 30-06 bbls shoot great as well.

I have handled several drillings, but none I like as well as these.

No doubt Mr Mashburns drilling is a nice one...
However I prefer a larger rifle calibre for deer, wild pigs and black bear.

Franz Sodia guns are some of the best I have seen.

Yes the idea of a drilling is versatility.
I'm glad that my two drillings have med cal rifle barrels (30-06 & 8x57r).

You then have a rifle that will handle big game, a double shotgun and if you want a small caliber rifle you can drop a einstecklauf in the right shot barrel.

I must add that while I consider my Sauer Drilling A No1, there are many times where a Double rifle drilling is a better choice.

I am becoming quite fond of My Blaser D 99 Duo, 9.3x74RX9,3x74RX20ga.

I am glad I have both.

For me a Blaser D99 in 9.3x74R, 9.3x74R, and a 20 gauge slug barrel and two scope a 3-12x56 for the high seat and a aimpint for driven boar hunts would be ideal, with a second set of 20 x 20 x 222 and another 3-12x56 for grouse and varmint.

I wouldn't hunt waterfowl with a drilling, as some do.

To me the drilling is a gun of the high seat, varmint hunting, and driven wild boar.

I would be too scared to take $8500 worth of drilling wildfowling.

Well, I never met a drilling I didn't like Wink
I prefer the 16's & 20s for their slimmer, lighter frames & I like 2 shot barrels for versatility. I don't like single shot shotguns for hunting (except flintlocks) and love single shot rifles. I also like moderate calibers like the 8X57. Had a Krieghof in 16 over that caliber that I wish I had back. But I also like the old straight case calibers 9.3X72 etc. I also love the old hammer drillings. So it's sure hard to say. I've had quite a few & loved them all. I had one with an 11mm barrel that wasn't very useful so I sleeved it to 30/30 ackley improved and it made a great drilling though it added some muzzle weight. All great choices by you guys here.

My dream drilling would be for the USA, a S/S double rifle chambered for 30 Blaser, with a 20 ga shot barrel below. Mounted with QD scope rings and bases, with a Leupold 1.75-7X40mm scope with illuminated crosshair apex. All with 26" barrels, at around 8lbs.

The deer/bear/elk/moose better take heed, when I set foot in the woods! Big Grin

Burkhard,

If I had money for a vierling, I would be ready for my retirement. Wink

A vierling has been my dream gun since I was 8 years old. I owned one for a short time about 25 years ago, but I needed to buy my little farm a bit more and had a standing offer that I accepted. It was a Ferlacher in 16/16/7X57R and 22LR with a 4X Hensoldt in claw mounts. I still dream of owning it again. Frowner I think a well regulated insert barrel for a conventional drilling is a very close second...but not quite as elegant as the vierling.

I'll second that sentiment.

While a beautiful veirling is way up on the list of things I'd love to have, it is way down on the list of things I need to have.

Having said that a 12/12/22 Hornet/7x57R would be about perfect.

PICTURED ABOVE IS MY DRILLING , A 1935 SEMPERT & KRIEGHOFF NEPTUN STANDARD 16 X 16 X 8 X 57JR MADE IN 1935

THIS WAS THE SECOND HIGHEST QUALITY. THE NEPTUN PRIMUS WAS THE TOP, FEATURING GOLD PLATED LOCKWORK

IT HAS BEAUTIFUL GAME SCENE ENGRAVING AND SEVERAL INTERESTING FEATURES.

THE ACTION HAS HAND DETACHABLE SIDELOCKS, WITH CONCEALED FASTENER.

THE RIFLE BARREL FEATURES THE "COMBI COCKER" AS USED ON KRIEGHOFF DOUBLE RIFLES (REMEMBER - THS WAS 1935 !)

THE ENTIRE TRIGGER GROUP IS REMOVABLE WITHOUT TOOLS.

IN THE TRAP BUTTPLATE THERE IS A 22 CALIBER INSERT BARREL FOR A SHOTGUN BARREL, THE INSTALLATION TOOL, AND ROOM FOR 2 CARTRIDGES EACH OF 22 LONG RIFLE AND 8 X 57 JR

THERE ARE SCOPE BASES FOR SEMPERT & KRIEGHOFF PATENT SLIDE ON MOUNTS. WHEN I GET TO IT I'LL SEE IF I CAN FIT A SET OF WARNE OR TALLEY RINGS.

ALL IN ALL A SUPER DRILLING FROM A TOP MAKER.

Tom,
You should be ashamed to have such a low quality drilling. With that coin finish, it's going to rust up there in that snow. Better send it to a more mild climate where it can be protected. You have my address, just let me know when it will arrive.
That is lovely!
