Drilling with 2 bbl sets?

A short while ago someone posted pictures of a drilling with 2 barrel sets on a forum (might have been this one, I’m having a senior moment). It was an old pre-war drilling and looked very similar to my pre-war drilling by Anton Weingarten of Dusseldorf. It had one barrel set with 2 shotgun barrels and a rifle barrel underneath, like mine, but also had a set with a shotgun barrel in the upper right position, a rifle barrel in the upper left position, and a rifle barrel in the underneath position. I believe the shotgun barrels were 16 gauge and the rifle barrels were 8x57IR. By arranging the barrels in the double rifle set the way he did, the maker was able to get away with using the same forend for both sets.

This looked like the ideal set up. The conventional drilling barrel set for when your primary game is feathered and the double rifle drilling barrel set for when your primary game is furred.

Does anyone still make drillings with two barrel set like this, maybe in 20ga 3†and either 8x57IRS or 9.3x74R?

Jack,

I'm having a senior moment, too.....

In all the Drilling variations I'm sure you could probably obtain what you desire outa Ferlach, Austria; although the price tag is gonna be pretty spendy.

IIRC the only "standard" production two barrel Drillings sets were/are (my moment) offered by Krieghoff, with an original Drilling Barrel Set (SXSw/rifle cartridge underneath) with the option of a 12/16/20 (depending on whatever Gauge the Drilling was chambered in) extra SXS shotgun barrel set; and I'm not too sure if this option is still available.

It may have been a Krieghoff. Most small name maker pre-war blitz action drillings like mine look exactly like pre-war Krieghoffs and I've often wondered if all the unfinished actions weren't made by the same company.

I downloaded the pictures that were posted and would post them here if I knew how.

an afterthought

a second barrel set normally costs about 50 % or more of the cost of the gun. buying two complete guns give you a lot more versatility and much easier disposal when it comes time to sell.

finding a customer who likes the same exact barrel combinations like you AND has the money to buy a two barrel set won't be easy.

selling two guns would be easier.

Thanks Tom,

You make a good point. I was thinking more in terms of travel convenience, particularly by air.

How good is Merkel's U.S. customer support after the sale on new double rifles and drillings?

I notice that Krieghoff offers their conventional Quatro drilling with a full length ESL insert in the same caliber as the rifle barrel. This turns a conventional drilling with one barrel set into the equivalent of the drilling with two barrel sets I describe.

Are these “ESL†inserts that Krieghoff offers (only if factory installed in a newly purchased drilling) actually made by KELLER & SIMMANN or someone similar? If so, can they be purchased separately and are they offered in 8x57IR (not IRS) for 16 gauge? If they are, I can convert my current drilling into what I want.
