Hi, I have never seen a drilling in real live but they have always facinated me. Couple a weeks ago I was hunting for Ptarmigan or Rjúpa in the highlands of south Iceland. There was very litle of rjupa but I saw 5 foxes but the range was to long for my 12ga shootgun. Now the range was from 70m up 150m out of range for shootgun but in range for riffle. I would propable choose 16 or 20ga shootgun side by side but would a 223 or something like that be in order? Who does manufacture such a drilling and what is the cost of such gun? Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match. Sherpi

Hi Sherpi, The Krieghoff on the top of the Gebrauchtwaffen-> Kombinierte waffen -section on this page would be worth concidering: http://www.waffen-schrum.de/waffen-schrum/index.html I would go for that myself, if I needed one. They are reliable dealers and if the price is really correct, that would be my choice.

If you could make do with a combination gun the Valmet/Tikka came in 222, 223, 22/250, and 243 (I think). I've corresponded with a fellow in the UK who said his Tikka 243 wouldn't stabilize anything heavier than 80 grains, but that should be more than plenty for foxes. In a drilling perhaps a rimmed cartridge would work better. How about a 22 Hornet at one end of the spectrum or a 220 Swift at the other? My, what harsh and beautiful country you hunt in. It looks like the moon or Mars, but what should we expect from such (geologically) new land. Good hunting!

In my simple mind you shouldn´t invite Murphy hence in any break open rifle the round should have a rim for the ejectors to work on. .22 Hornet, 5,6x52R, 6x70R, 6,5X57R and some others are great rounds and will produce out to 100+ meters on foxes. A great and balanced drilling is a 16/70 with 9,3x74R or an older one in 9,3x72 with the 74R you also have a round with ample ouumphh to deal with bears and other beasts. Best regards Chris.

If your foxes are as lightly built as foxes in Australia (ours came from England) then the ideal would be 17HRFM insert in the shot gun barrel of a scoped drilling. then you can have a 9.3x74R barrel for the big stuff. Alas, I am unaware of such an insert - I have one in 22Mag which is accrate for a 22Mag but will only allow head shots out to 75m. he 17 Hornady seems to have much better accuracy than the 22Mag. I have a switch barrel Ruger 77/22 and get 3-4" groups at 100m with the 22Mag barrel but 0.5" groups with the 17 barrel. mike

Thanks for the replies. The fox in Iceland is a artic fox that was already in Iceland when the first settlers came in 870 A.D. Because of the wind I would not choose something like 17hrfm, but rather something eith a heavier bullet. Now the other problem would be that those rimmed cardridges would be difficult to optain here (easy to get the hornet, 222 223 243 22-250) If I would buy me a drilling (I whant 2 shootgun barrels) would a scope interfare with wingshooting the birds. Would it be better to get ampoint or zeiss z-point or simple have "true glo" or good open sights. Sauer and Zeiss, perfect match. Sherpi

Sherpi you could have a scope like a 1,5-6x42 mounted and on 1,5 you can still shoot the shotgun good, however a good drilling has a swing och clawmount that allows you to remove the scope when not in use. you should really go with the 5,6x52R in the drilling. Living in sweden I could probably find a few decent drillings for you in that cal at about 12-15' skr ie 1900-2200 UDS? If you whant that help please do PM mee.. Best regards Chris.

sherpi, Both my drillings are scoped, one with claw mounts and one with an EAW swing off mount. he claw mounts are quicker to get on and off but I've got more confidence in the swing off mount returning to zero. I can shoot clays reasonably well with the scope set on 1.5x but it's not as easy as without the scope. I tend to carry the scope and attach it when needed. regards, mike

Buy a used drilling in 16/70x16/70 and 7x57R. This combination is often to find (mostly Sauer Drillings) in good used quality. Take an insert barrel in 5,6x50R, 5,6x52R, 6x62R frères (very rare but very high velocity)6,5x57R, 6,5x65RWS.Rimnmed ammo should be your first choice. My smith Jürgen has an online shop www.lippe-waffen.de (click "Gebrauchtes") and he will find the right used drilling for an affordable price. Burkhard

I think a good selection for fox would be 243, you would also then have a passable deer calibre at your disposal. the nut behind the butt

Not having hands on experience with 243 Win, I still know that there is no rim on the case and hence it´s not suited for a drilling. 5,6x50Mag R is a great round for a drilling. If one considers that .22 bullet to be to smallish go with the 6,5x57R then you have real bullets to choose from not the varmint styled 6mm:s Best regards Christian..
