So where are the best places to find parts for the M48?

The only thing I know I want for sure is a new safety/shroud. Other than that I'll just see what tickles my fancy.

I started working on it a few years ago, but it's been sitting in the safe for a long time now. I'm thinking it's time to finish it.

Is this a full rifle or reduced to an action?

Will you want a three pos safety or a two position safety....there is quite a difference in price.....about $100 for a two position or double that (or more) for a three position safety.

It's a full rifle that I "sporterized". It was my first attempt at anything like that, so it doesn't look very good. Shoots ok though. If I can get around to it I'll get some pics of it on here. I might just end up dropping it into a different stock though.

Two position I guess. I don't really see the need to lock the bolt. Or, does anyone make a bent lever to replace the original? I'd just like to be able to flip it with my thumb rather than pull my whole hand away from the rifle.

There are some "flip up and "flick down" safeties available that work well with a scope.....they run about $25 and can be installed yourself.

The two position safeties do lock the bolt as do the three pos ones....but to load and unload you must turn the safety to the fire position.....something like the old Remington safety and something I don't like.

Even the flip up/down safeties will lock the bolt and require you to load and unload on the fire position!

Hmmm Well, I might just leave it the way it is. I'm not going to have it tapped for a scope, so clearance isn't an issue. I'll either put an aperture sight on it or a scout scope mount on the rear leaf. Haven't decided yet.

Among the finest safeties ever devised is the original Mauser safety it's at the top of the list....it's a great safety and the only reason to change it is to install a scope over it.

I agree vapo. They are functionaly the best Ive ever seen. They look good all polished up an blued on an open sighted rifle too..

Those aftermarket ones like the model 70 type built into the shroud are spendy buggers.. But any saftey for a m-98 will work on a Yugo..

Almost any 2-pos safety that works from the right will cam over as the bolt is opened. The geometry makes it very hard to get the little "tit" that blocks the bolt from opening to keep from being forced over.

I have seen some that lock the bolt due to burrs or sharp edges on the surfaces involved but those can be easily corrected to allow the safety to cam over from the safe position as the bolt handle is raised.

I have a Mark II safety that I will ship for $15. It is a take-off from a VZ500, the commercial version of the M48 Yugo. (not that it makes ANY difference on any M98)

It cams over easily on bolt opening & will mork W/a scope on "medium" rings. All that's neccessary to install is to notch the shroud. It takes all of maybe 15 minutes to install.

Send me $25 & I will ship the safety W/a bolt shroud that is already modified.

As has been said the origional 98 safety is about as good as it gets but the lengthened and lowered by Parker Hale is better for thumb location (by right handed shooter) if aperture or scope is contemplated.
