RL22 seems to be the recommended powder for most 6.5x55 120-140gr loads in 20-24" barreled rifles, but I wonder if its best for my 18" psuedo-scout. Is there a faster burning powder I should be using in my M38 Swede for my 140gr Sierra TMK loads?

Hornady 3rd edition, shows an 18" barrel used for their data. They list 2500 fps with powders ranging from IMR 4320 - 39.7 grns to H4831 -46.2 grns with the 140 grn Horn bulets.

36-37 ish grains of Varget make a nice combo. Load 36 in my 260 Remington with a 156 grain Privi bullet. Great load. At one time many gun cranks and gun mazines got it in their mind that short barreled rifles required fast powder and condemned 4831,4350 etc. then we got chronographs and the experts went into hiding!! I called it copy cat expertise , it still exists Ray Atkinson Atkinson Hunting Adventures 10 Ward Lane, Filer, Idaho, 83328 208-731-4120 rayatkinsonhunting@gmail.com

I'd be interested in a range report when you get everything sorted! I am also assembling a M94 based pseudo-scout in military style. My old Lyman manual lists IMR's 4320 and 4895 as being good powders giving around 2,500 fps out of the 17-1/2" bbl with a 1:7.5 in. twist.
