I really like Enfields, of every type, even including well done sporterized rifles. Unfortunately, for every nicely executed example there are a few dozen done with more enthusiasm then skill. I completely understand the appeal of a functional well made surplus rifle for next to nothing (my Dad hunted with an Arisaka decades back when that was what he could afford), but I really enjoy trying to restore a good example to its original configuration and I can refinish individual parts guilt free since it was already altered.

For the record, I totally understand that this is a pointless and financially losing idea by a mile, but is fun (did 2 No1 mk3s for my son and I last year).

Here's my latest victim, a 1943 No4 that was converted to a 45-70 "Gibbs Summit Rifle" by either Gibbs or Navy Arms (who bought Gibbs) about 20 years back. It came with a 22" barrel and an aweful monte carlo stock, and the action literally looked like it had been worked on with a dremmel as there were random gouges inside the action. I figured I could do no more harm than was already done, so I bought some reproduction wood and started fitting it up.

It's at long last about 95% complete except for small bits like sling swivels, etc. A friend cut the barrel to 18" and threaded it and I added a hydrid 46 suppressor and a vortex 4-12 scope. I still need to make a front sight. I test fired it a few times for function and ejection but rain has stopped me the last two days from putting it through its paces now that it is scoped, so hopefully tomorrow. I plan for it to be mostly a subsonic fun range gun and loaded several types of 500 grain cast and plated subsonic loads including some shortened to 2.2" OAL in order to try fast powders like unique and a few supers with RL7. With the long barrel it is quieter than my 45ACP Delisle copy but with over twice the power. I can't wait to try this out!!! Smiler

The sole purpose of a rifle is to please it's owner.

I built a small fishing boat - would, fiberglass, epoxy. Probably had $250 in materials in it including the paint in it when I was done. Why? when a used aluminumis probably less than $200 - becuase I wanted to.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Just a quick update. I got out and fired several 5 shot groups in a light rain and gusty cross wind that were sub or right at 1 MOA at 100 yards. I was thrilled! I went back in dead calm weather the next day and averaged about 1.75MOA. Oh well. I'll take 1.75 MOA every day of the week for initial performance with my first stab at coming up with a load considering all of the different bullets, powders, lengths, etc I tried. It will only get better and is definitely minute of steel plate at 400 yards, which is plenty enough for fun. To be honest Im surprised and really happy with the accuracy.
