Hi, I'm new on this forum... Your opinions on the 8x57JRS, please.. Good for european game? Components for reloading? Effective Range? I have seen one on a re-barreled Ruger#1, but didnt get the chance to talk to the owner... Quite interesting... M

Here in France it is very popular in Express rifles. Since the invention of the 8mm Remington there is now a great variety of bullets to choose from for the reloader. Same dies as for the 8 X 57 JS, just a different shell holder so no problem there. It's a really nice well balanced cartridge, it's the European 30-06 and will do everything the 30-06 will do. In the rimmed version it may be a tad slower than in the rimless, but it's still enough for boar at driven hunt shooting ranges and with the right bullet. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

The 8 X 57 Mauser or just known as the 8MM Mauser here in the states is poorly loaded my US companies and is mostly a handloading proposition here. I Europe however the ammo companies make real good stuff for it. It's a very powerful and long range round.....I'd say it's a good 250 yard shooter for big game. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Wink & Vapodog: Thanks alot for your quick answers.. WINK: Why is it slower as a rimmed cartridge and not the same as a rimless?? Pressure problems..??? M

Most manufacturers will load to slightly lower pressures in break open guns like Express rifles. Rimless cartridges are usually designed for bolt actions which can handle higher pressures. There other examples like the .375 H&H versus the .375 Flanged. If the express rifle has a 26 inch barrel and the bolt action has a 24 inch barrel, the velocity differences may not be that great in the end. _________________________________ AR, where the hopeless, hysterical hypochondriacs of history become the nattering nabobs of negativisim.

Where will a Ruger#1 fit in...Does it has the strength of a bolt rifle, or should it be considered as a "break open". I know the Ruger#1 is a "falling block" but I have no knowledge of that technology.. I still find the Ruger#1 in a classic good european caliber quite interesting, or a classic american caliber....something unique over a Single Shot....I think you know what I mean. M

The Ruger #1 is a very strong action and is as strong as a bolt.....have no fear of stout handloads in this action. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery."
