Basicaly I have a commercial FN mauser in 7mag. No markings on it at all except a 4 digit # on the side of the lug and below the woodline it says FN made in Belgium. The bbl is a hart. Condition is roughly 98% (actually looks new but I'm sure there is some wear somewhere) What would it be worth in todays market? I'm not a big fan of the 7mag and was wondering if I should just rebarrel it or sell/trade for something I will use. Rebarreling will run you about $400.....It would be less costly to merely trade your gun for something you want. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Why not a fan?? I love the 7mag. But, you are far better off to trade it for something you want, or sell it to do the same. Difficulty is inevitable Misery is optional

The 7mm Remington Magnum is not one of my favorites either. Looking at its performance objectively, however, I must admit it really is a great cartridge. If it shoots good you might want to reconsider getting rid of it. If you must, however, trading it might be best; little expense and no long wait. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Thanks guys. Nothing wrong with the 7mag but the few I have shot knock the crap out of you. I figure if I'm gonna deal with a decent recoil, I may as well throw some big bullets down range and grab a 338 or 375. I picked this up in trade thinking of a project (magnum action) but now with a newborn in the house and a few other issues, it will be a while before it happens. I may just get a box or 2 of ammo, sight it in and save it for a "loaner" gun when family comes up. Check how accurate it is. A 7Rem is a super long range special. FNs are not light but they have a good substantial feeling about them. I have a FN Action Husky with a K4 in 30/06 that I wrangled out of a gun shop for 425 dollars. I figure that it is the ultimate loaner gun. Sincerely, Thomas Thomas Kennedy

I personally like the FN Mauser action. Have built a 330-06 and a .376/.416 Steyr Improved on that action. Bought another one in .270 for $310 to build into a boomer ... and made the mistake of shooting it. Was too accurate to take apart! The decision of whether or not to build depends a lot on what you like and how accurate the rifle is as it exists. 7mm Rem Mag makes a pretty good Mulie or Elk rifle out west. I tried to learn to like the 7mm Rem Mag, really, but when I looked at its performance objectively, however, I must admit it really failed to impress me. In the process of trying to like the 7 mag, however, one good thing became of it. I learned to like the 270 Winchester, after all these years. I've never understood the initial popularity of the 7mm Rem Magnum. It is neither fish nor fowl -- larger than needed for deer or antelope, and on the light side for elk and moose. I'd prefer a plain old '06 for larger game (or better yet, a .30 or .33 magnum), and something like the .270 for smaller game. I think today's market somewhat agrees: My dealer friend avoids taking in 7mm magnums like the plague; says there's no demand and they sit for months on the shelf without a serious looker.

The 7mm rem Mag is an aquired taste, like beer! Mine has very light recoil, a joy to shoot. I also have a 1947 FN '98 receiver Husqvarna that is truely outstanding. I would also rebarrel it if you are not happy.

Just keep in mind that the bolt face is opened for the magnum as are the feed rails. It could easily be turned into a 300 Win Mag or one of the Ruger Mags but don't buy it thinking you'll make a 270 etc out of it. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

If I were in your shoes and not enamored with the caliber as well as budget constraints, I would first try and find a takeoff barrel in a caliber you like and have it fitted to the tune of maybe $250 all in?? Otherwise keep it as is, or trade it. Not too many 338's or 375's get shot out so I bet you can find a barrel for under $100 if you are patient. Greg

I'm assuming its a real FN but with very little markings..... If I rebarrel, I was thinking a nice shorty 458 with peep sight vs a scope. A nice hiking rifle/ bear stalking rifle. I just had a 375H&H completed on a VZ24 so I dont need a 375, I have more than enough 30's in the house. I think I'll just shoot it and go from there.
