If you are recoil shy, and you want to shoot medium game, you may shoot 180 grs Nosler BT bullets, loaded with a RL 15 or similar class powder (around 65 gr). The recoil is very soft and I have got excellent results with boars, deers, goats and sheeps . In my rifle, (8.5 lb weight) I get around 3000 ft/s, it's very comfortable to shoot and this load is very accurate.

The rifle weighs 8 lb and I weigh 230lb, I think no big deal!
Would a Bushnell Elite 4200 4-16x40 be suitable?

Well, look at it this way: It kicks noticeably LESS than a .375 H&H of the same weight! I see you're in SA, so I'll bet you've had some experience with the .375......

Mine is a Model 70 Classic Super Grade with 4.5-14 Varixiii. Super rifle and don't worry about recoil. If you can handle a .300 you can handle the .338. My advice is to shoot one before deciding.
