Well after many years of trying to find one, I finally located a really nice pre-64 Winchester Model 70 in .300 H&H that I could afford. I have seen a few but they were alway either a little too beat up or pristine enough that you didn't want to hunt with it and fell into the collector category........... with a price that matched.

It is getting shipped and I should have it later next week. Probably going to load it with either a 180 grain Partition or A-frames. Anyone have any pet loads for their .300 H&H they would care to share?

I had that little problem with my last one.
Took it to the range and shot two 5-shot groups at 100 in the low .7's after using three rounds to get the load centered. Friend saw the rifle and laid a pro-grade guilt trip about actually shooting one that clean. Yeah, I caved and sold it to him.

Barnes 180gr MRX BT with 71gr of RL-19 had an ES of 6fps for all 13 shots.

Lots of good loading data here for what ever it's worth I change from RL19 to RL22 behind a 180gr TTSX.

Idaho IMHO they are all meant to be shot.....
Perhaps another thread

Yes I am afraid I fall into the same category Zephyr. I can appreciate why there are people that want to collect near perfect specimens, but I own rifles to shoot them, not just dust them and look at them.

No need to abuse them of course, but some good honest wear that comes with going on many adventures with the owner just makes them more appealing in my books. Wink

Just having one built. I'm hoping to shoot 165 grain out of mine. Hoping the RL19 works as I've got a good stock of it.

H4350 is supposed to be the powder of choice for the 300 H&H

I've only used the 180 Partition and taken deer, elk, moose and bear, rarely with more than 1 shot. My powder was IMR4350 but there are many more listed above that would work equally well or better now.

Regrettably, the rifle belongs to someone else as it went down the road to finish payment on one of my sheep hunts (good trade).

Congratulations on the fine rifle!

I have a 1951 Model that I have used in Argentina and South Africa. I lucked into a gun shop that was going out of business and had 8 boxes of Federal Safari 180gr. Nosler Partitions for sale. They weren't priced so I asked how much. He looked like he had won the lottery and gave me a heck of a price on them. I took them all. I must have been the only person that had asked about them in years. Brought them home and put 3 shots in 1/2 inch at 100yds. I have never shot anything else thru the rifle; probably won't until they are gone.

I just picked up a "new" 1956 M70 in 300 H&H. It was exactly what I was looking for; used but not abused, with a few character marks. I found Federal Premium 180gr trophy copper ammo at Gander Mountain on sale for $37.00. I always start with factory ammo to get a reference point for what a rifle can do before I start loading, plus I get some brass.

Thanks to everyone for sharing the load info.

No argument there gentlemen, this was a good friend, and he offered more than I would have asked for it. I'll get another one, as soon as I repay the S&L (aka my lovely wife) for the loan I took out yesterday for a pair of 10x42 Geovids.

After taking my once in lifetime New Mex oryx ten years ago it sat fallow until this past month when I got the itch. The oryx fell to a 200 a frame w/63.0H4350. My new best load os with the 175 gr Barnes LRX with either RL 22 or H4831 both going less than MOA AT 100. Bullet seated at 3.64 with lands at 3.70. Loads in 70-71 gr with both. Work up but my pre 64 showed no pressure signs at this level. Now to find an animal to try the bullet on!

I just picked one up recently as well and it seems to really like 180 gr Sierra Gamekings and 71 gr of RL-23.

I sold my old pre 64 last year in one of my moments!! wish I hadn't but I read a dumb article that wrung out suspicion that the 300 H&H wasn't that much better than a 30-06, that was BS and a slanted article and I knew better but was bored with the 300 H&H as I had been killing all manor of game and the results were always boringly outstanding. homer

Well, having paid for my sin, I went on the search to replace it...Stumbled on a Rem 721 at a real nice price, but it broke my solum vow never to own another push feed gun, so I bought it, stuck a 4X Leupold on it, inletted it a bit and it shoots everything with bench rest accuracy and take a max load of of RL-19 or RL-22 and it shoots the 180 and 200s to the same POI with either powder and 1/2 to 1" groups are the norm, add more powder and it does the same with 150s and 165....ITS NEVER JAMMED!! and that's a no. 2, homer live and learn, the hard part is admitting a push feed can work on rare ocassions.. sofa

Both of my 300 H&H with proper handloads, walked on the shirttail of the Wby..even in some reloading books where I found my load, not so in other reloading books, I guess some are scairt of frivolous law suits..

I'll be keeping this one and I don't have to worry about scratching up a 721! wave
and a 180 or 200 gr. Accubond or Nosler respectively at 3000 FPS is mighty good elk medicine, and has proven itself to me many times over.

My Sako L61R shoots marvelously with 73 grains of IMR 7828SSC under a 180 grain Nosler Accubond, yielding 2960 fps, which is about the original velocity with the old round. It will do somewhat more, but this velocity just seems "right" with it, so that's where I keep it. Killed a cow elk with one shot the last time I used it.

For years I've been looking for a mate for my Custom Sako 375 H&H, which wears a Rogard finish VX3 2.5-8 and classic McMillam stock. At the last big Reno show I stubbed across its twin, accept it's chambered for the 375's little brother, the 300 H&H. It, too, wears Rogard and NP3, McMillan classic stock and VX3 2.5-8.

Been waiting a long time. Now it's time to get dies and brass.

Back in the '60's, when I was a graduate student in Illinois, I got a message from a fellow named Don Something-or-other in Texas, with whom I had done business before. He had bought a collection of Model 70's which had been stolen and recovered, in sadly damaged state, after being thrown hastily into the trunk of a car and allowed to bump together for a considerable length of time. Among the collection was a .300 H&H, which I instantly thought of as the perfect rifle for Africa, one that I would not have to be concerned about getting banged up.

I bought it (for around $135.00, as I recall), and still have it, about 90 head of plains game later. I never used anything but factory Winchester ammunition with 180 grain Silvertips in it, and the performance was uniformly satisfactory.

Well the rifle finally arrived in the mail yesterday. I am impressed with the condition of it......... has to be about 95%. Very please with it.

Chap I bought it off of said it turns in 3/4" groups with the 180 Nosler Partition in the Federal factory loads.

Some good info on this thread. Thanks. Also in the thread that has been resurrected.
