My model 70 338 Win Mag is my favorite elk rifle. I was just wondering, what do you guys hunt with your 338's? I have never had the opportunity to hunt anything larger than a elk.

I have an old, ragged M77 Ruger. I have hunted hogs and deer with it........

When I lived up north I used mine primarily for moose but also elk and bear.

I sure like mine it's a Mod 70 Classic with the long tube. Just bought it last summer and shot it in with Fed premiums with Barnes bullits. It shoots under inch at 100. I hunted all fall with it here in NCentral Tx and shot 3 hogs all one shot kills, one weighing 300+. I hate I'm having to sell it due to health. I sure like the round and was planning to take to SA next June if we are able to go now.

I use mine for deer and elk, with elk being the primary usage. I would also use it for brown bear or anything large if the opportunity presented itself.

Let´s see... duiker, steenbuck, baboon, warthog, bushbuck, roe deer, red deer, nyala, zebra and moose.
It´s an stainless / laminated Ruger M77 with a little tinkering done, and it just plain WORKS.

I have 15 different hunting rifles of different varations, most are customs...........If someone had to take 'em all from me but one, I would ask to keep my Bansner .338 WM.

I have used it here in Alberta on Both Deer, Moose, Elk, Black bear, Coyotes, gophers.....you name it. This Rifle accompanies me, more than any other in the rack, and for good reason.

Oh ya, I DRT'ed a Brown Bear on the Peninsula last fall @ 30 yards with it too.

Love it!!

Well, let's see what I've hunted with a .338. Hmmm . . . feral hogs in Texas, cow elk in New Mexico, bull elk in Colorado, black bears in Alberta, oryx, springbok, kudu, zebra, baboon, red hartebeast, and black wildebeast in Africa . . . I guess that's about it. Not a particular versatile cartridge it seems.

Its the bees knees. I have shot warthog, kudu, moose, bear, caribou, elk, and deer. It is my pick if I could only have one gun for North America.

I bought mine specifically to guide hunters on the bigger antelope such as gemsbuck, kudu and wildebeest in our big mountains and plains.
I have to admit that I have never really gotten to like this particular rifle. It is a Sako 75 stainless synthetic with a great pedigree and a Leupold 2.5 to 8, but somehow I have not gelled with it. Too bulky.
That said, I am already happier than I was a year or so ago.

I have shot about everything in Africa from Duiker to a couple of Cape Buffalo..I don't consider it ideal for Cape Buffalo but it got me by, but Buffalo can make a lot of tracks sometimes, even with a good hit, about on par with the 9.3x62 IMO..Good but a long way from perfect....I think a .416 works better in other words.
The .338 is my all time favorite caliber for N. American game like elk to Brown Bear, and it fine on deer. It is also my favorite all around African plainsgame rifle.

It seems like if you know how to use it and it was legal - anything from field mouse to elephant. Almost perfect for anything in Africa. 250gr or 300gr loaded to approx. 2300-2400 ft/s for bushveld. 225gr @ approx. 2800+ flat shooting for everywhere else!

I adore my .338 WM ... a pre-64 Custom w Krieger SS cut rifled barrel and a GunKote finish, on a McMillan stock. Holds a 2" group at 300 yards with 225 Barnes X's. Good enough.

Was going to Africa in 2004, but had scope problems Sunday before leaving on Wednesday. So ... only smaller animals such as deer and pigs.

Great chambering!

I've owned in the neighborhood of a dozen different 338WMs over the years. With them I've killed or tried to kill every animal from chipmunks up to brown bears. shooting every bullet from 200 gr thru 250 gr...they all seem to like the Sierra Grand Slam 250s.

All the local boys around here swear by those 250 gr. Sierras on elk, they show up with perfectly expanded bullets every year at the local coffee shop showing them off so I guess they are a good bullet..

I think I will stick with the 210 Noslers and 300 gr. Woodleighs, if it ain't broke don't try and fix it..

2thdoc & Atkinson: For purposes of clarification, are we talking about the 250 gr Sierra Boattail, or the 250 gr Speer Grand Slam?

By the way, I've just loaded some 225 Nosler Accubonds, substituted for the same load I was using for 225 gr. Nosler Partitions. While I have not had a chance yet to try them on game, they are delightfully accurate from the bench and their ballistic coefficient should make them an excellent bullet for barrel-stretching shots.

Hmmm...one hog, sitka blacktails, caribou, moose, goat, black bear, and brown bear all with 225 grain Barnes X bullets. As of this fall, I am now handloading the 225 TTSX. We'll see how they perform.

I'm with Sambar02, I am on my second barrel in my 338 Win Mag, Ruger M77, and 225gn bullets are about ideal for Sambar. I use 180gn Noslers on Pigs, and 160gn Barnes X (yet to try the TTSX) for someting that shoots flat for smaller game at greater distances, and it drops them on the spot.
