I own several Remington 700's, but not in that particular configuration. For some one wanting a single all round rifle, it would be hard to beat. Loaded with 180gr NBT's launched around 3000 fps you could kill everything in NA with boring consistancy.

I just went to the rifle range and broke in the barrel on mine this morning.

Actually, mine is not a stainless fluted, it is one of the Boone and Crockett Limited Edition CDL's that Remington made in 2008. I have been drooling over it in a gun store about a 100 miles from here for two years. I was teasing the guy that runs the store that I wish he would sell that gun. He said he had been saving it for me and made me a deal on it.

I took it out this morning and broke the barrel in (you know, shoot, clean, shoot, clean, etc.)
Then I shot a few groups with 180 grain Sierra flat base bullets and 168 grain Barnes TSX bullets. Most all groups were under an inch.

Interestingly, this new 300 WSM has a 26 inch barrel while the older one that I already owned has a 24 inch barrel. I checked them both on the chronograph today and there simply is no difference in speed on these two rifles. Shooting 3 shot groups some loads were barely faster in one rifle and others were barely faster in the other. (too small a sample size of each load to be statistically significant)

Fortunately, the new gun shoots the load I was already shooting in the old one quite well. In either gun, a max load of H 4350 behind a 168 grain Barnes TSX gives groups of about 0.8 inches.

I like the new CDL, the 26 inch blued barrel is fluted so the weight is not an issue. About the only thing wrong with this rifle is that the R3 pad does not fit very well. Whoever installed the pad did not center it on the butt of the rifle, it sticks out on one side. Not bad, just an annoyance on an otherwise beautifull rifle.

So, I guess I am done, I will just continue to use the load I had already settled on in both rifles. Pure luck, to be sure.

Tom,

Two years back I bought two CDL SF Limited's in 260 Rem. First one then another a few months later after I had been developing some great loads in the first. The first, I immediately took to my gunsmith, Malm on this board, and let him touch up a few items. Touch up the crown, glass and pillar bed, free float and adjust the trigger to 2 lbs. I no problem developing a dozen+ loads from 120 to 140 gr that shot MOA or better.

As I said I was impressed enough with the first, I thought I'd get my, then 18 yr old, daughter a matching rifle. I didn't put the money/smithing into it, opting to free float and adjust the trigger myself. I didn't shoot as well as the first. I sold it to a gent from Penn who wanted one for his son.

Would I buy one again if I was in the market; ABSOLUTELY!

One of our sons bought the blued CDL in 300 Win Mag just before he got married. He is a real outdoorsman that bowhunts, riflehunts, fishes, ice fishing, and trapping.

He has 3 rifles now in his battery:

10/22 with a Butler Creek bull barrel and a Butler Creek stock with a 3x9 scope

Ruger Model 77 (old style) 22-250 with a 4x16 scope

Rem CDL 300 Mag with a 3200 3x9 scope on it

There might be some gaps in that assortment but they aren't that big. He has taken some large bull elk and Mule Deer bucks at long ranges with the CDL and loves it's feel, accuracy, and overall performance. I load for him and the game he has taken is impressive. It could be one of Remington's soon to be classic configurations,

I have a blued CDL also in a .243 that I use for varmints and deer here in Idaho. After adjusting the trigger down to a reasonable level the darn thing is a good enough shooter for some long range varmint work. Accuracy with mine using some very fast 55 grain NBT's is just at 1" which will work.

I would buy it

Bought one in 260 when I retired. Love it. I had to get used to the stock. It is pretty thin on the forearm for my big hands. Great rifle.

30378,
I believe you had that at the range a couple weeks ago. I think it looks better on the Axis than setting than on the bench.

One more for good measure

The general rule is the rings an mounts should match the color of the scope.

Really?

Where is that rule written?

I think it was in a fashion magazine. That way the rings don't clash with the scope. Of course, if it hits the bullseye, most guys don't really care.

I have one in 257 weatherby, it's topped with a silver leupold VX3 4.5-14 X 40 with silver leupold rings and bases. I love the look of the rifle but it has been one of the most difficult rifles to work a load up for. I finally got it shooting under an inch at 100yds, so I'm stopping there for a while.

30378,

Is that a Bushnell scope on your rifle with the short eyepiece?
And which model?

What trigger did the 700 CDL come out with?
Just curious to know since Rem is taking a beating with its standard trigger.
Did Rem now discard this trigger under question or are they still fitting them?

Yes, it is a 6500 Bushnell 4.5x30x50. I really like the compact length and minimal weight. Clarity is really good and adjustment tracking is dead on. The rifle came with a Mark X trigger but you are looking at a Jewell trigger on it now.
