3 shot group @ 100 5/8"
26" barrel
Oehler 35

No sign of high pressure

I also tried this load in three other 7mm Rem Mag with excellent accuracy. However, I didn't chronograph the speed.

I think it was in the old Handloaders Guide from IMR that I first tried IMR-7828 in the 7mag was a max load of 66gr with 175gr bullet. I could get in the mid 2900fps with 24" barrel alittle faster than what they published.

Hey Trax, Are you able to get 33 reloads per case with your Load?

I seem to remember the IMR-4831 load for that particular old Ruger Mark-I being 4gr over the MAX shown in the real old FREE IMR Handload Booklet. Even then, I got 33 reloads per case.

So, I might have been able to push it a bit faster, just as you suggest.

Hello Tom

I can't remember where I seen it but, if I remeber correctly I thought that 68.0 grains of IMR-7828 is a max load with 175. The one place that I may have read that was on www.stevespages.com

However, I never tried it once I reached the velocity and accuracy with this load.

I might advise anyone loading for the 7mm Mag to know that Hodgdon's website shows 61 grains to be max.

I'm not at all saying that 66 grains is dangerous or inappropriate in any way....I have a .308 shooting well over max from Hodgdon data too!

Just make sure you work up!

You said the key words "Just make sure you work up". And acually I think I might be able to improve the accuracy by playing with bullet seating, or make it worse.

Also have the same situation with my 300 RUM, shooting 96 grains RL-25 with 180 grain Swift A Frame. I believe it 4 grains over max. Every rifle is different!

By coincidence, I just happen to have that manual and you're 100% correct....it does say 66 grains.

It doesn't make a lick of diffrence. If you want to whine about case life, cost of factory loads, bolt metallurgy (sp?), 15 grains of bullet weight diffrence on the high end, get a 30-06 and be perfect. Otherwise look at rifles in 270 Wby and 7 mag and when you find one or the other you just hafta have...get it. If you don't like it sell it and try the other. If you love it get the other too, you might like it even better. I have used both and like the 7 mag. My sun used to rise and set with the 257 Wby, but 20 years later after shooting most medium to smalls bores I could get my hands on, I have found the 270Bee to my perfect round. 270 win to 300 win mag will all do the same job with a good bullet and wise shot selection.

I've had 3 different .270 Wby's over the last 10-12 years or so, by far my favorite caliber for deer and the like; why ?? don't really know, but it's something beyond just the ballistics of the round.... maybe just to be a bit different, + 7 mags are about as exciting to me as watching paint dry, a great though it certainly is...

Otherwise, what Quintus said; find the rifle you like and go for it... my current (and last) .270 Wby is a Rifles Inc., shoots like a house of fire ...

Both calibers shoot similary, maybe the 270 Wby is a bit flatter, but 7 RM can use heavier bullets.
So it also depends on the use which do.
7mm Rem is easier to find and to reload, my choise would be the 7 RM.
