I'm with Paul about cartridge length. Even if not a big bore, consider a long 404-based round. (I know, I'm stuck in a rut.) I mentioned earlier my idea for a max-COL 458or416-404 Imp. This would be a great action for it. [If the neck was from 2.5" out to end of case (~2.88-ish") and you seated a 370g North Fork, you'd be at 3.94" COL! That would give you about 2800 fps from a 24" bbl, IOW 26" Wby velocities, with higher mag capacity - does no one see my genius?!]

Tonto You haven't told us what you would like this rifle to do. are you going to hunt with it or do you just want some calibre that is "different"???? Like several have suggested big boomers are fun if not very practical for hunting in North America . I wouldn't choose an action as big as a P-17 for a 35 Whelan. If you have your heart set on a big 35 that you can hunt with look at a 358 Norma. You can use 338 Win brass and it is killer! If you want something bigger yet something that you can still hunt with (yea a 470 will kill deer or moose but...) look seriously at a 338 Rum. Just my opinion.
Why waste an Enfield on a small round regardless of how nice that round is....Use a VZ24, 33 or some Mauser and put the Enfield away for a real hammer someday, like a 505 Gibbs.....You can buy a Mauser for very little and it makes a cleaner neater rifle than that big old enfield....

I was looking to build a medium bore for plainsgame someday. More because I want to build another rifle than because I need one. Seems like most think i should use this action for a big bore. Well Ill have to give that some thought now.
.338-.378 is a wonderful cartridge. I have heard that .338-.416 (Rigby, not Weatherby) is too. I would not consider either to be a waste of an Enfield action.

Or even the Lapua. A 300g SMK seated to the base of the neck probably wouldn't fit! That is to say, definitely not a waste of space. Use the Improved case and a 34" bbl.
