Hi Guys, the old barrel does not shoot well, therefore a new one is due. It's to be a plains game / highland red deer rifle, i.e. 160 - 170 grain bullets to be shot. which twist rate and which barrel contour would you recommend to achive precision up to 300 m? thanks for the advice McStern

I just built one for a gentleman in Namibia. It was a 7mm RM. We settled on a 1-8 twist and a #4 contour, which is a little heavier than the factory barrel. He is getting sub-moa with the heavy bullets, 160 to 170 grain. That combination will work great out to 1000m. This is my recommendation...........Tom SCI lifer NRA Patron DRSS DSC

I've done a 7mm on a No4 Lilja before. Makes for a heavy gun. Mine is a Beanfield gun with 25" barrel. I've also used No2 and No3 barrels for mountain guns and gp sporters. I like both of those for that purpose. Without knowing what you have I can't say what I'd use but a 2 or 3 with a 1-9" is my guess. I don't see any need to go faster than 1-9" for what you want and no heavier than a No3 if you carry it.

I'd go with a 24" barrel with a 1:9 twist. Can't say about the contour - It'll depend on the weight you want to carry. ________ Ray

I have a 7m/m Wby Mag with a 24" No. 2 contour 9" twist barrel on a Rem 700 action. It shoots legitimate 1/2 MOA groups quite regularly from the bench with 175 gr. bullets. As it is in a light, cheapo, injection-moulded plastic stock ($50), it shoots MUCH better than I had hoped for. If I had to change anything about it, I would add a red hair of weight to it...maybe a No. 2-1/2 contour barrel. The recoil is not at all severe, but even less recoil would be even better, especially when aiming uphill from prone or sitting.
