Gents,
I've made some of the necessary decisions for my new custom ZG 47 now. It will be a 9.3x64 with Blackburn bottom metal and trigger, the 1" mounts from Talley should be on their way aswell (The Swarovski 3-9x36 is already in my safe.)
Now I need to make a decision on the safety, I wanted to have a three position safety from Jim Wisner but I havn't been able to get in touch with him yet. I tried to send him a mail, but so far no response What are my other options? I do know that at least Dakota, Recknagel and Gentry makes this kind of safetys but what should I choose?

All suggestions are welcome

Regards
Henrik

I have opted to use the EAW 3 position safety on my 1909 .404 project, it has the nice old mauser lumps & bumps and I felt looked more classic than the dakata 76 3 pos which was the other one I was thinking of using.

If you are not "set" on 3-position I installed a 2 position Burgess safety on my 09 in 7mm rem. and love it. I personally have no use for the 3rd position so went with the 2. I have a pic somewhere if you want to consider it.

(I see somebody already offered to buy the original safety parts from you, damn! that is my favorite part of that action)

Red,
I would be very interested in a picture of your 2 pos safety. I'm not really "set" on anything at this stage and if the 2 pos safety is really nice I could live without the "third position"
I've been trying to get my hands on some Burgess rings for my scope, but so far no sucess. Are the safetys easier to find then the rings?

I have 2-pos. safeties on one of my 22-H rifles and on one of my ZG-47s. These look more original and cost less, but, I find that they are noisier than a Wisner 3-pos. Wisner makes these as do other U.S. 'smiths, Brownells should have them.

I don't have any of the Burgess rings, but both the safeties and the rings can be had directly from Tom as he still makes them. The safety you see here was sent to me just a few months ago. I exchanged my cocking piece and shroud, this was a drop in fit. (well, almost, it was nice and tight so I had to use a wrench) but no fitting was necessary.

Hope this helps you out.

Red,

thoose picture didn't help at all, now I'm even more confused but the safety does look really nice. Maybe I should go with a 2 pos safety instead?

I got a reply from Jim Wisner, which means that I got a decision to make

How would you rate the quality of the work? Does the safety work silently and what about the "feel" of the safety? I'm pretty certain about what your reply will be but I would appreciate your input anyway

Have you got any contact info on mr Burgess?

Thanks for the really nice pictures.

Henrik,

As far as the quality of the work goes, it is great, very tight tolerances, great finish, ready to go straight to the bluing process. It does have an audible "click" if you just pop it of. It goes to safe smoothly and pops off well. The amount of resistance can be adjusted by a notch in the cocking piece. And it looks great. If you look close in the picture you will see from the top the pin that holds the lever in place, it is contoured to match the radius of the top of that shroud.

Here is contact info. thosem@hotmail.com

Thank you Red,
I'm now convinced that I should go with Tom Burgess 2 position safety and his rings for mounting aswell.

If you are interested I will gladly sell you the original safety once i got my hands on the replacement. I dont know what the turnaround time will be for an order to mr Burgess but we'll just have to wait and see. Since I'm doing a pair I might have to buy two sets of rings and safeties... hmmmm.. better keep this decision from the mrs....

Regards,
Henrik
