I moved to western Washington state 25 years ago. It seems I have been on a search for the perfect rifle ever since then. I have roamed and hunted with a wide variety of weapons-none of which ever seemed "just right." Now I have ordered a CZ550 FS in 9.3x62. My longest shot so far on this side of the mountains was 150 yards on elk. Most often I find myself in the thickest tangles and most shots have been 50 yards or less. I'm likely to run into black bears, black tailed deer and elk on any given day and I can't resist the occassional head shot on grouse. I think I have found the perfect rifle. Now I need the "perfect bullet" to do it all. Any suggestions? I've heard the 270 gr. HOrnady opens up nicely on deer and such. Will it hold together on an elk?

Nice to hear you have a 9.3. I'm just getting mine together and should be shooting it within 2 weeks.
Wish I would have been shooting mine for awhile to give you an opinion but not there yet.
In a matter of moments someone will speak up and profess the wonders of the Nosler Partition as if it were "the only" reliable bullet in the world, soon to be followed by someone singing the same praises for the Northforks.
Both of them fine bullets I might add but believe it or not non premium bullets have and still do kill Elk every year, I doubt you would lose a heart/lung shot Elk even with a lowly PRVI or Speer bullet so give one of them a try and see what you think.
Good luck and lets hear some reports!

In 9,3x62 my choice for the "Perfect" Bullet would be the 250gr X bullet. I moly mine. Load it with enough IMR-4895, Varget or RL-15 to about 2600fps (easy to do under 60,000psi) and go hunt.
A buddy of mine made 22 one shot kills in Africa with this combo. It shoots flatter than the 286's and is deadly on anything up to dangerous game with a well placed shot, and it would probably drop most dangerous game too.
Good luck with your CZ. If your's is the short barrel version you might stop at 2500fps.
I would avoid the 270gr speer for anything larger than deer. It's thin skinned and has a reputation for blowing up...................DJ

I've used the 286gr Partition and Barnes X for hunting deer and plains game. My rifle will put either into an inch from the bench and on an 8" target from field positions out to 300 yards. I'd think the 250gr X would probably be the berries too.

I believe your CZ will make a great all round rifle for most anything. Big Grin

Welcome to AR Al.
Do you mean the 270 grain Speer?
I have used them on Red Deer in the 9.3x57, they worked well, but the velocity is lower than the x62.
If you search this page for 9.3 Speer you will find mixed reports. They are not as good as other bullets on The Big Stuff but are adequate for deer
Happy Hunting.

My choice would be the North Fork bullets. At your speeds you probably need the premium bullets, but for me I want the best in my chamber when I am going after anything bigger than Deer. I shoot a couple of .358 STA's which are somewhat hotter than the 9.3X62 and for both of them the North Forks are deadly. wave Good shooting.

At the velocities of the 9.3x62 most any bullet should hold up well on elk. The only thing that you need to make yours the perfect rifle is NO yellow form. Welcome to AR!

Good hunting,

Andy

Hi Al
Im just north of you in BC and agree that its the perfect rifle for what I need here too, mine is the medium lux and I have a few loads all of which shoot into less than and inch for 3 at 100 yds. Ive had good luck with the NP's, speer's and privi's and doubt anything shot well with either would be going very far.

just buy 500 prvi's and shoot them all up about twenty per session at 50-100-150-200yds until they are gone...that should get you to hunting season. While you are doing that, buy a hundred Nosler 286 Partitions and find a load for them at about 2400fps, as you did with the prvi 286's. Zero the rifle at 200 yds and go happy knowing nothing in the mountains is safe from you. It's what I am doing with my CZ FS.

It's amazing that NO ONE has suggested maybe the best all around bullet that you (in particular due to your location and potenital "targets") could use. That being the Nosler 250 Accubond. I bought a bunch once I realized that they hold together at 2500 fps, much like all bonded bullets. I've dug some out of a red clay bank at 225 yds (usually the distance I shoot). ALL have been beautiful mushrooms and non that I have found have separate. Most weigh from 165 to 190 grains (animals are more fogiving than VA red clay I'm sure....I intend to use this load in Idaho this fall for elk. Very accurate out to 300 yards with a Bal Coef. of .492 or so...BobG in VA

My 9.3x62 (an old Husky from the 50´s that was restocked by boha) will shoot anything well. I´ve used Lapua Megas, Northfork, PMC, Norma FMJ and Rhinos in all bullet weights and the rifle groups like a dream.

I don´t know if this is typical of the 9.3x62 but for your sakes I hope so Wink

If you are referring to the Speer 270gr. spitzer, it may perform well on game, but I couldn't get my CZ550 American to shoot them very well. The Nosler 286 gr. Partition is another story. It's more bullet than needed for most North American game, but it shoots sub-MOA in my rifle.

I'd rather have "too much" very accurate bullet than a "just right" bullet with poor accuracy.

That said, I need to try Nosler's 250 gr. Accubond. That might be just the ticket....

Good luck with your CZ,
desmobob

I would go with the 286 Woodleigh Soft RN or the 286 Nosler Partition.

I only used my 9.3 on deer at that was with factory loaded Lapua ammunition loaded with the 286gr Mega bullet. The Bullet expands nicely on big red deer and will easily travel full length from chest to tail. Side on shots even at 200yards the bullet would still exit. Excellent performance in my opinion.
