Am looking for a rifle to shoot upto 500 yards on animals like Asian Ibex, Elk etc. Just wanted to hear from 300 RUM's owners their experiences with this caliber. Is it an accurate caliber and easy to reload?

Would you opt for the 300 Weatherby caliber instead or is it pretty much the same?

I've owned two of the 300 RUM's. One of the original stainless sendero's and a 700 Police.
Both would shoot sub inch groups with my handloads. I shot 168 gr. Ballistic tips out of both.
Neither were braked. In my opinion they kicked more than my 338 RUM before I had it braked.
Uses a ton of powder.
RUM brass is cheaper than Weatherby.
Rems. are probably easier to work on.
Hard to find an Accumark in 300 Wby. for what you can buy a Sendero for.

Biggest negative I found was shooting anything under 200 yds. results in massive loss of edible meat due to bloodshot meat.

The 300 RUM has a bit more steam than the Weatherby and no belt so should be less hassle to load for and should feed better as well. I have a 300 RUM in a Winchester Stainless Classic but have yet to fire a shot from it. I have it topped with a Leupold 4.5x14x40AO with the B&C reticle so should be quite the ticket for the longer shots. I have been playing with my handguns as of late and have not fired a shot from any of my centerfire rifles for awhile.

Two good friends have 300 RUMS. Both are Remington 700's, one's a Sendero, the other is a CDL. Both shoot sub MOA.

It seemed capable enough for this 890yd Moose!

If he did indeed use a Berger 180 vld,[say 3300mv] thats about 1861v/1384e at 900yd.
That tells me i can load 300sav/180vld 2300mv and im right to go out to 300yd...... popcorn

No real shooting experiance with either but load data shows 150 fps with the 300RUM over 300 Weatherby in same weight of bullet useing 10-11% more powder. Go cheap--get a Weathery Vanguard in 300 Weatherby for about $470 and shoot the hell of it then have Pac-nor rebaarrel it to 26". I ran a 308 180gr TSX BT on my balistic program at 3150fps and 3300fps with a sight in of 300yrds and the diference at 500yrds is less than 2.5". PS Long range shooting videos are like watching magic on tv--if you don't get it right the first time you can just keep trying it till you do. On video above, what are those 2 empty cases on his shooting rest for?????

I'm just finishing a 300 RUM for a customer. I built him a 7mm RUM about a year ago. It shoots sub-MOA. He built a 1000 yd. range on his farm because of that rifle. The 7mm RUM has noticeably less recoil and will do everything you need or want. Just a thought, the same holds true for thr 7mm Wby.....Tom

Bought mine for a long range elk rig. Easy to reload and sub MOA right out of the box. I shoot 180gr TSX on top of a bunch of RL25. I originally had mine braked until I shot it hunting without ear protection. My ears hurt for a week. Took the brake off and don't mind the recoil.

I like mine. It's a 700 PSS. It'll shoot MOA with handloads or the old 200gr Remington partition ammo.

Mostly I've used 180gr Partitions for hunting. If you don't let it cool between shots, groups will open up a little. And it's burning a lot of powder, so two shots heat the barrel.

I've used it for game at long distance. The combination of flat trajectory and heavy projectiles minimize wind deflection and drop. I shot two smallish animals inside 100 yds and the bullet came apart and in both cases the damage to the animal was pretty bad. In one case it looked like the Elmer Fudd cartoon with the big smoking hole.

I find the recoil off the bench enormous. Worse than much heavier calibers due to the speed of the recoil impulse. Of course you don't notice it when you're hunting.

The 300 RUM is my go to big game rifle. Started out as a Rem 700 SPS. Bedded it, talley one piece bases/rings and a ziess 3-9x40. Nothing fancy but it kills better than anything I have ever had before. So far my one and only load is a barnes 168gr TSX @ 3270fps. Two moose, 3 black bear, and two caribou in the last couple years. All with steller peroformance. I got over 5 feet of penetration on the last moose I shot. Second shot was a texas heart shot, that exited out the front of the chest. Everything other than that moose was one shot stops. Shoots as flat as a frozen rope, and hits like a freight train.

I have had all of the RUMs other than the 7mm. Of the rest of them I have found that they all shoot very accurately and perform 200-400 fps over what the standard magnums run. I currently use a 300 RUM with 168gr tsx and the 375 RUM with 270gr TSX. I couldn't be happier with the pair.

The 338 RUM with 225gr NOsler Accubond at 3140fps was a great performer also but didn't find room for it sandwiched between the 300 and 375.

I think that the case design for the RUM is about as good as it gets, really easy to reload and almost every one is accurate. I work with a good buddy in his gunshop, he is a full service gunsmith. He has been several 300 RUMs this year, most weighing between 7.5-8 pounds, they have all been solid performers.

No doubt that's a good load, but my 300 WM in a 24" tube will safely shoot the same bullet just shy of 3300 fps, with 20+ grains less powder.

Arjun,

I have to agree with Rob. I use a 300 WM and it will push the 180 ACB at 3100 fps with a lot less powder and recoil than the Ultra. Check the trajectory charts and see how much you really gain by going to the Ultra. Very litte!

I run that load due to its accuracy. its below max for sure but will shoot 1.5" groups at 300 yards regularly. i have a buddy who runs the same bullet to close to 3600fps in his sendaro 300 rum. I just found the accuracy I wanted early, and the animals don't seem to mind.

THe 300 RUM really shines with heavy long bullets compared to the 300 WM. There is no doubt that you can outrun any bullet weight with the rum compared to the WM, probably not important but really noticeable with the heavy long bullets.

Used a 300 RUM on my first trip to Africa some years ago. I took 16 animals with 17 rounds. Longest was a Gemsbok at 418 yards. I used 180gr Sciroccos and 200gr Partitions...terrific ballistics, and tend to be accurate as well. I've had two...a Sendero Stainless Fluted, and a KS Mountain Rifle from the Custom Shop. I currently have a 300 RUM barrel for my Blaser, but haven't used it yet.

The 300 WM with a 26" barrel and 83 grs of Re25 will push a 180 Accubond to 3300 fps. The 300 RUM pushed just as hard will reach 3500 fps, almost the equal of a 30-378. But, with a premium bullet like the Accubond and range finders, there is no need of 3500 fps or 3300 fps for that matter. Shot placement is more important. AIU

Have a Mod 70 classic stainless (26") in 300 RUM. A sub minute of angle gun. ran 180 accubonds to 3400 FPS with no issue. I threw away the plastic stock and added a laminated one and bedded it. Issue is I rarely take it out of the safe. I can hit as well with my 270 or 7 mag and they have sorter barrels. If I need more gun I typically go up to a 338 gun.
