Interesting stuff. I will delve deeper into 300 RUM stuff. I am not a long range hunter per se, but like to have the ability available when I hunt certain areas and certain critters, which like I say is a 500 yard or so max for me.

Fish30114, I've owned and or shot 308, 30-06, 300H&H, 300 WM and 300 Dakota. If I only shoot one rifle the rest of my life, it'll be the 300 Dakota. With the 168 and 180 gr bullets it'll take almost every animal in North America and is easy to shoot (not much recoil).

Leftcoast, although I am not a fan of 30 cal or super duper mags, if I were to get one I would also go with the Dakota, or possibly the venerable H&H. Lou

What's the availability of Dakota brass like? And the quality?

At least now, with the RUM you have Nosler brass as an alternative to Remington, though my RUM shot just fine with the Rem rubbish after it was prepped.........

I mostly use Federal brass in my RUM. I split an order with another AR member a few years ago when you could get it, even already primed.

First off Mac, HELL YEAH Nosler Brass is better than REM. By miles.

Sitting that aside as it doesn't apply to Dakota brass, their new 300 Brass is of good quality, and their former mfg. was good as well, I feel like the brass was quite similar, but the older stuff had a clearer headstamp. It lasts a long time in 7mm.

I've gott 200 pieces and the dies for the 300 Dakota, so I'm really leaning that way.

Thanks again to all--D

The most important thing to consider before choosing a long range cartridge is the availability of brass or cases.Choose one that there are most brands of cases available for.Look for Winchester or Lapua cases. If you have reloaded and played with different components lately you should know the story on Remington cases. thumbdown I am still waiting for that advanced reloader to tell me exactly what is responsible for their issues. It would be a big step forward me to know.

Yes, giant step. Looking at the case should have been enough warning to go with the .300 Weatherby.

I briefly own a Mark V in 30-378 when they were first introduced, but I sold it for a good profit without even firing it.Someone offered me too much money, because there were huge waiting lists in Canada at the time, and I used the money to build a custom 300ultramag which turned out to be more accurate than the Mark V for the same price. The 30-378 does produce about 100fps more with the same bullet, but to me it isn't worth the extreme high brass prices or the extra recoil.

At the moment two my go to rifles are a 338 RUM and a 30-378. Found both easy to load for with several bullets and powders. Currently loading the 250 AB in the RUM and the 200 AB in the Wby. The Wby being a bit easier on the shoulder.
The 300 RUM is one great round, but I'm kinda satisfied with what I have

The 30-378 and a 180gr TSX ruined his day at 721yds in WY back in 05.

I guess it's time for me to chime in with my two cents. I just love reading this thread coming to realize the majority of the Weatherby bashers here probably have never even seen a 30/378 let alone owned, shot, or hunted with one and professing their arm chair expertise because they can read a ballistic chart.

Yes, everything about a 30/378 is expensive but it does not take long before I get an ASS full of hearing about what hunting, shooting, and other specific realms of our sport cost. If you can't afford it.......well. The 30/378 is the top fuel dragster of 30 caliber ctgs. Top end incremental performance comes at an ever increasing expotental cost. It is truely one of the best elk ctgs ever developed. The RUM come close but does not get the cigar.

All the other mentioned 30 cals will kill elk, deer, hogs etc. but an option that is often overlooked, the 30/378 can be loaded up for top end performance and loaded down to any of those othe ctgs performance levels for a wide range of applications. Those others will never be a 30/378.

No, it's not for everyone, but for the people that do own a 30/378......CONGRATS!!
