Thanks for the feedback guys. I would love to find a Remington 760 Carbine in 308. Unfortunately when I do, the price is so out of line for the condition of the gun. I did find one last year that was priced real reasonable. Unfortunately at the time I was short of cash. Here in PA autoloaders are illegal to deer hunt. I had forgotten about the 600 or even the older model 7's with the 18.5" barrel.

The 308 actually works particularly well in short barrels. I've had a 20" model 7, a 20" M-70 and a Steyr Scout. All handled well and shot from good to great. Stay in the 19 to 20" range and you'll have a good balance......DJ

Also, don't forget about the Ruger M77 Mark II International (M77RSI MKII).

The overall length is 38 1/4 inches. Some people like the full length stock and some don't. I kind of like it. I've been kicking around the idea of getting one of these in .308 Win.
