I'm new to the 9.3x62 cartridge. Everything that I have read about the cartridge is very impressive. My father just had a custom rifle in this caliber made up for me as a birthday present. It is a P17 enfield with 22" barrel, metal life finish, and a leupold 2.5 scout scope in scout mount and original peep with medium gold bead front, in a kevlar stock. I'm really pleased with this rifle and would like to find a few good loads for it. It will mainly be used for moose/carabou but could be used for grizzly also. I have some 270gr Speer SP and Nosler 286gr Partitions. I would also like to check out some of the barnes TSX bullets. I have H380, H414, H4350, and Re19 powders with graf brass.

G'day, I can help with my favourite load, H 414 - 53gr, cci primer, norma brass ( you may need to drop a couple of grains and work up) nosler partition 286gr. very accurate (.085 MOA) easy on the shoulder, low pressure signs, 2350fps (+/- 25 fps). With the low pressure signs, you may have room to work up a hotter load, since this one is the same as Barnes starting load.
Hope this helps.

Cheers, Dave.

Cool

bear,

What a great present! Congratulations!

9.3x62 is a great caliber. I've had great success with both the Speer 270 gr. and the Nosler BT 250 gr.

From the powders you have listed I do not have any experience with H-380, H-414 or Re-19 but have tried H-4350 in the 9.3 and it was very accurate. The reloading data indicated the velocity was lower than if other powders are used. I tried IMR-4320 that accordingly should have given better velocity also and it too, was very accurate but my supply has run out.

I've gone to 55.6 grains of VV N-140 for a super accurate load that supposedly gives better velocity.

Cheers,

My best load in my 550 CZ American 9.3x62 is 65gr of Ramshot BigGame, Lapua Brass, WLR Primer and 286gr Partitions. Very accurate and a velocity of 2454fps.
There are many on this forum that are having great results with R-15 in the 9.3.

For those with access to South African Powders...

57.5grns S355 behind a 286grn Woodleigh Solid or Stuart soft give 2380fps in a 23" barrel. Norma cases and CCI magnum primer.

54 grns of S335 gives the same performance but at a higher pressure. Can safely get a 286grn bullet to 2450fps with 355.

With the speer 270grn 56grns S335, RWS brass, CCI mag primer gives 2500fps in my Mauser

My load is 57 grains of IMR4895, 286-grain Nosler Partitions, Norma cases, Winchester large rifle primers, for 2335 fps and 0.5" groups at 100 yards out of the R93 Blaser's 23" barrel.

I use Varget with Nosler 286gr partition, Barnes 286gr. X and Speer 270gr SP with good results. I've tried W760 (H414's evil twin Wink ) too but Varget shoots under an inch at 100yds so I just keep using it.

Neat rifle, hope it gives you years of service and good memories.

H4895 and Partitions for game, Speers over the same charge for a practice load. Don't use the Speer on game -- it's very accurate but too soft. Search the threads here for more loads and stories.

Thebear_78,

Thats a really nice looking rifle you have there!

As far as loads go, I did not have much luck with the Speer 270grns with either H414, BLC-2 nor Re-15, so thats still work in progress.

I did get the Barnes X 286grn to shoot using 58grns of Reloader 15 and they average about 3/4" if i do my part. I used them on plainsgame earlier this year and was generally very pleased with the results.

If I were doing it again, I think I would try 250grn Barnes X either the originals on the TSX's or maybe the Swift A Frames in the same weight...

regards,

Pete

The loads I have used for years in my 26" barreled 9.3x62s are:

59 grs. of RL-15 with a 286 Nosler for 2609 FPS or 58 grs. of same at 2520 FPS, both max loads and chronographed in several rifles..as usual cut back 10% and work up....

58 grs. of RL-15 with the 300 gr. Swift for 2451 FPS...

56.5 of RL-15 with the 320 gr. Woodleigh for 2390 FPS and a bit faster in some rifles...

I have used H414 quite a bit, but after a lot of testing, just can't find any powder that comes close to RL-15, so thats all I use anymore. You will get a bit less with the shorter barrels, the 9.3x62 really responds to a long tube...

Ray and all,

What twist for the 9.3x62 were you going to have a rifle rebarelled to a 22"er in that caliber?

Well I took it out and shot it tonight. It shoots great. Along with the rifle the gunsmith sent a box of loads with it. 270gr Speer with 58gr of H414 @ 2400fps. This was his "go to" load for his own 9.3x62. I loaded up a box last night of the same load and shot it today.

Accuracy was great, with the 2.5x scout scope 100 yard groups were around 1 1/4 - 1 1/2". 200 yard groups hovered between 3-4". I even shot a few at 300 yards just for kicks. I found that I could use the taper point on the crosshairs for a 300 yard aimpoint. I only shot one 5 shot group at 300 yards and it was between 7-8". Even with the medium gold bead and original peep 100 yard groups were right around 3".

So far this 270gr speer seems to be a pretty accurate bullet. I'm going to try some loads with the nosler partition. I'll have to check out that northfork bullet too. I think the speer would be fine for carabou and moose but I might want something a little tougher in case I run across a griz.

I've been mainly using Hodgdon extreme powders due to thier temperature tolerance but will check out that re 15. How does Re15 hold up to temperature swings. It can sometimes go from 60s and sunny to 30s and snow in a matter of a few days up here during the hunting season.

I think this is going to make a great do all alaskan big game rifle.

For those asking this question and have access to the Australian powder ADI, AR2206, these are some of my own 9.3x62 loads from a Blaser R93.
258GN RWS H MANTLE with 56.5GNS AR2206=243FPS.
286GN WOODLEIGH soft&solids with 55.5gns AR2206=2339fps.
300GN SWIFT A FRAME softs with 54.5GNS of AR2206= 2307FPS.
These loads shoot similar point of impact. Adam C.

The speer 270 gr works perefectly as a feral pig & vermin bullet and would be excellent on deer.......it's intended purpose I suspect.

I´m also new to the 9.3x62 but I get great accuracy with a 250gr Barnes X using PMP brass, CCI primers and 3.82 grams of VV 135. According to the book this is a max load and the powder is a bit compressed but no signs of pressure in my gun. I´d recommend backing down 10% and building up from there.

Not unlike Ray's experience, my CZ likes RL-15. With 58 gr of RL-15 and Norma or Graf brass, it pushes a 286 Nosler partition at 2425 fps. Work great in RSA!

Have used the 270 Speer on a couple of deer and a hog or two from the 9,3x62 and from a 9,3x74R double rifle. Have seen the bullets fragment on every field impact. For me that is bullet failure, althought the animals would not have thought that. I'll stick with Noslers or Woodleighs until I try some Northforks.
