That we have heard forever that the 280 Remington is loaded to 60,000 psi vs. the 270 at 65,000 psi because the Rem pump and semi-autos couldn't handle the pressure.
Both the 760 and 740 were chambered for the 244 at 65,000 psi, so what's the real answer?

Plus the Remington pump and auto were already chambered for .270 which just adds to the mystery.

Its mostly about playing it safe so the factorys don't get hammered by a over zealous American boy wanting to make his gun a REAL hammer...the 7x57 and 8x57 are a great example with velocity mirrowing the 30-30..when in fact the can both duplicate a 30-06 with no problem at all, My all time hunting load in the 7x57 is a 175 gr. Nosler partition at 2700 FPS, 5 grs less than the old 06, it'll do..

The real reason is that one person somewhere at some time made the decision to so limit the 280 for reasons he found compelling. Like all things decided by man, there is wide room for error.
We now can say, as others posted above, there was nor is any logical reason to have done so.

Sometimes I think when Remington comes up with a new idea, especially a good one they then pass it to the "lets screw this up" department just before release. That way they have an excuse to not support it later on which they are also well known for.
