Which would be the best powder to use in loading a 180gr RN in a 30-40 Krag, IMR3031 or IMR4064? Thanks.

I don't see IMR4064 listed as a 30/40 powder in my Nosler Manual. I use 45.5 grs of IMR4350 with a 180gr Nosler Partition. In my custom Siamese Mauser it shoots 1". Have never used IMR3031, I mostly just use IMR4350 for everything. Probably not the best powder in all cases but works well most of the time in most anything. Now that Hodgdon H205 is no longer available, H414/WW760 and IMR 4350 are about the best .30/40 powders. These give relatively high velocitier with pretty mild pressures...... "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Well for accuracy, and convenience and just nostalgia, I have awfully good luck using a fast powder in my 30/40 Krag ( 1898 Version)...I use 25 grains of SR 4759 with ALL bullet weights in mine... 3031 and 4064 might give you a little more velocity, but that won't mean much in the real world.... modern book say to use 4350 because it will give lower pressures than either the 3031 or 4064....but it also gives more recoil... 25 grains of SR 4759 will give Krag pressures, 40K or so.. great accuracy with all bullet weights and less recoil... If ya don't like that load, then I go secondly to 30 grains of RL 7 or IMR 4198.... with the accuracy nod going to RL 7..... cheers seafire
