I hunt more with my .270 than any of my other rifles and I expect others do as well. Lots of discussion about .270 and its limits around. What are your favorite .270 loads and what do you use them for? (Or, what would you use?)

Here are mine (usual safety comments apply… work up to charge, check for pressure, use at own risk, etc.).

Factory- Federal 130 hi-shok- deer
Federal premium 150 partition- mule deer, elk

Handloads-
150 partition, 58 gr H4831- elk, mule deer

140 interlock, 59 gr H4831- mule deer, pronghorn, sheep

100 gr Hornady, 25 gr IMR 4227- water filled milk jugs at 1-200 yds (FUN field practice!!!)

I've tried TBBC, Nosler Partitions, Interbonds, and Accubonds and nothing even comes close to the accuracy I get with the Triple Shocks.

The good old 270 win has been my primary rifle cartridge for over 30 years. I don't handload, but have taken moose, white tails, and black bears with 150gr core-lokts (prior to premium bullets). Got a newer 270 2 years ago, and the most accurate factory loads are 140gr Rem Ultra Core-lokts and 140 gr Win Supreme Accubonds. I have never felt "under-gunned" with a 270 Win!

When I first started loading I loaded about fifty rounds with 130 grain XLC to about 2900 fps. Not a particularly accurate round, but produced a nice quick kill on a pass through shot of a broadside elk at approx. 200 yards. The animal didn't travel twenty yards. I definately wasn't undergunned.

Don't overlook the 110 GR. loads for rabbits and squirrels. I used sierras for this mostly. As I don't get out into the deserts much anymore for Jacks' I still use them for the tree squirrels and occasionally use them on diggers. If you think a 223 does a number on a digger try a .270.
There are also the 160 gr. Partition if you can find them or have them and I still have a couple of boxes of 170 gr. which I used for Elk and bear in dark timber. These heavy bullets do real business on the larger game when the ranges aren't as long.

When I was shooting only the .270 I used old 4831 surplus in .56 and .59 gr. loads. Last time I reloaded I used 3031.

Remington 700 w/ 22" tube

Loves 150 grn Hdy SPILs over a max charge of H4831 (R+P Brass, WLR primers)

Also loves 140 grn NBTs over 55.1 grns of H4831.

Both loads will do .5s-.6s at 100.

I just love the old .270 and it's my rifle I use for sheep & caribou. I've always had inconsistant accuracy using the 4350 & 4831 powders and 150 gr. bullets. I've finally done some testing with Rldr-22 and have found I get much better results. When I get a chance, I'm gonna start working with the 150 Gr. Northfork since Northforks performed much better in my .338 Mag. Finally, once my accurate, consistant load is found, I'll begin playing with seating depth. I'd recommend you try some Rldr-22 with your rifle. Bear in Fairbanks

I'll second the Rl-22, I used H4831 for over 30 years and got very good accuracy and speed. Tried Rl-22 last year and am even happier. Getting very good accuracy from the Interlock, Interbond, and Accubond. Have yet to try the bonded stuff on game, got everything the last two years with my 25's.

1/4 Inch thick metal plates at 200 yards, simply awesome.

I own quite a number of rifles, so as a result I try to keep my loads for a given rifle to one excellent load that does one job well.

My .270 is a favorite for open country whitetails. I use a 130 grain Nosler Solid Base propelled by 58.5 grains of original surplus 4831. This is a Sako with a barrel that tends to be both "tight" and "fast", so although this is less powder than is usually listed as "maximum", this load yields 3200 fps from my gun with warm but acceptable pressures.

I made the longest shot I've ever taken on a smallish whitetail doe with this combination. It would also be great for antelope and mulies, but I only get a chance to hunt those occassionally.

My present 270 is a 24 inch barreled Mauser action in a Lee 6 interprises synthetic stock. I exclusively used the 150 grain Speer flat base for many years on hogs, deer, antelope and elk with perfect results. Last year I got 1000 each of Hornady 130 and 150 SPILS and took an antelope with the lighter bullet and an elk with the heavier bullet. No complaints. I have never used anything but H4831 in my ptesent rifle and like winchester brass best.

The bear in the photo thinks a Pre-64 M70 .270 with 130 grain Nosler Partitions loaded with Reloader 22 seems to be quite an effective load.

The best .270 powder ever is old surplus 4831 (also know as 4350 Data) the stuff that Jack O'connor used....

It will get 100 to 200 FPS more than any modern powder and accuracy is great in almost all .270. they go together like bread and gravy..

Other than that then RL-22, H and IMR-4831 are your best bets, try them all and use the most accurate...

I have an old Sears JC Higgins FN 98 chambered in 270 that shoots anything you put through it well. I've never reloaded for it, but it will shoot Federal 130's into 7/8" groups. I used it on a Spike Elk 2 years ago, but wouldn't use the 270 again for Elk, that's my opinion, yours may be different.

Pretty hard to beat the 270 for most game smaller than Elk. I can't think of a finer deer rifle, and won't be getting rid of mine any time soon.

Favorite Load = 150 grain SGK over 53.5 grains of IMR-4350. "General purpose use" out to 400 yards.

Any of those loads would blow the primers in any .270 I've worked with, but every rifle is an individual. Maybe Seafire's rifle is actually a .280 and he just doesn't know it.

My wifes favorite:
100gr. Barnes X, 59grs. IMR4350, Win. WLR, R-P Case. 3370fps.
Although the 100gr. X's are discontinued, I see Barnes is coming out with a 110gr. TSX this should reveil similar terminal results.
She has taken 2 cow moose and 3 very large bodied Alberta deer and numerous smaller deer with this load, Have only recovered 1 bullet so far, most go clean through leaving a 1" sized exit wound.
This should get the banter going, but hell it works.

Naw Stoney, you are wrong. It is actually a 30/06, not a 280. Yeah I was wondering if anyone would notice that.

Some days my shooting ability is a " shooting 270 loads in a 280" kinda day.

Actually I use 150 and sometimes 140 grain load data for the 160 grain Nosler, and get about 2950 out of a 24 inch barrel, with the 160. So it is a Semi Warm Load, but I have never had a case fail, or a primer pop and the cases were always tight on the next reload,....

That 160 SSP is a darn good bullet, and uses the older shape Nosler has dropped in all but a few bullets. The 160 SSP in 270 cal. and the 220 gr SSP in 30 caliber are my two favorite partition bullets.

I agree - the 160 NP is one very fine bullet - in a 24" barreled 270 I get 2850 fps using SC4831 - 55 gr

The loads my 700C likes are: 57.0gr/IMR4831/CCI/Rem./130Spt Hornady and 57.5gr/RL22/CCI/Rem/150Spt Partition. I could add about the same amounts of H4831 powder with the bullets and still have excellent results, but for the reason (stated on this thread), my rifle does not like IMR4350. The .270 was the first deer rifle I bought 37 years ago along with a Lee "hand" loader. I think it is one of the most useful calibers I own.
