has anyone bought one of these yet? if so, please give us your opinion. function, finish, etc. i'm thinking of getting a 799 in 7.62x39 for my daughter to use for deer and with the possibility of rebarreling to 6.5 grendle later on. thanks...bud

how can you buy something that doesn't exist. i have never seen one of these remingtons yet. the last time i checked with several distributors they hadn't seen any from remington either. although they are supposed to be the same actions/ rifles imported for several years by others, so we know they are actually being made, remington hasn't been able to get them into the marketplace.

well said

there have been several threads on the subject of Remington's inability to bring us guns that customers seem to want.

Makes no difference.......they just don't. You can wait or buy something else.

Have you considered a CZ in that chambering? They are available and the reports on them are good.

borealis bob...yes i have considered a cz 527. in fact i already have one rebarreled to 6PPC and my father has one in 6 PPC and another in 6.5 grendle. i am interested in the remington so as to have another option without that cz magazine hanging down in front of the trigger guard. the 799 is going to have to have some real good reviews to make me choose it over a cz. but...options are a good thang Big Grin

Vapodog: Are you trying to be facetious or trying to make a joke?
The last I heard the fine folks at Remington "brought" over 6,000,000 (six million!) units of their Model 700 Rifle ALONE to the shooting public!
And these Rifles have been brought to us in a plethora of calibers from 17 Remington, 221 Fireball, 222 Remington, 204 Ruger, 300 Weatherby, 300 Magnums of several other varieties as well along with 25/06, 257 Roberts, 7mm/08, 260 Remington, 220 Swift, 22-250, 6mm Remington, 350 Remington Magnum, 6.8 Remington, 8mm Remington Magnum, 7mm Remington Magnum, on up through the huge dangerous game calibers. And probably another dozen calibers I have forgotten to mention!
These calibers have been offered to Remington Rifle and Model 700 customers in the past and most right up until today!
Let alone all the happy Model 7, Model XR-100 and Model 597 etc owners.
I know a lot of people who are happy shopping through Remingtons Rifle offerings of the day!
I have not as yet seen any of the 798's and 799's in person - and I could not even guess why they are shown in their catalog but not yet available - I do seem to remember other companies in the past advertising Rifles that were not yet on store shelves AND advertising Rifles that a purchaser then had trouble getting ammo for!
Poor policy on all their parts, that!
Patience will be rewarded I am sure.
Long live Big Green!

VG....this thread is about the imported 798 and 799.
My comment is in that context. Sorry if it wasn't clear.

VapoDog: Received.
I mistook the part of your original post where you stated Remington "never" makes Rifles folks want to MEAN - Remington never makes Rifles that folks want!
Sorry.

In fact I just bought a new Remington M-7 CDL in 260. It's a fine looking rifle even though I haven't fired it yet.

I've made some tongue in cheek comments about the Remington 700 but in fact I think it's a pretty good rifle.

Their inability to bring to market the 798-799 as well as the Spartan rifles, however should really have folks wondering. There have been many threads and posts on this subject.

That and the quality of the Zastava actions themselves.

I just got the latest issue of petersen's rifleshooter and there is a piece about these rifles in it by John Sundra. He gave them a favorable review and couldn't say more about the mauser action. The figures on his test rounds also seemed to be pretty fair for factory ammo. Good read. Check it out.

I rather like the Zastava action.
At least the 98 version. I have a MK 10 action and had it rebarreld and stocked. It is now a 25,06. Although for the most part , I prefer a FN, the yugos have a better trigger guard.
Right now though , if I wanted a CRF rifle, (and when will I not)And did not want to spend a ton of money, my 1st choice would be a CZ 550. I have a .243 on lay away and and I sort of been bitten by the idea of a big bore. mabye a .375 HH. I really have no use for one at all, but when did that stop me !
Actally I hear Barnes is going to make a 250 grain tripple shock, for the 375. Should make a great Elk round, but alot more power than you need for the purpose.
Nothing wrong with the rugers. For somereason. a 77 wood and steal in 300 win is apealing, can't tell you why that particular caliber. ...tj3006

for what its worth....
i have a zastava 98 in .308 i like the action shoots 3 shots touching at 100 mtrs off the bench and the price was rite!
i got it as a knock about rifle for pigs etc... and was supprised to see they have become no longer available as a zastava and i need to now buy it as a remington, the exact same gun for near twice the price!!! i even dloaded the instructions to compare..... exactly the same. so now i dont want to scratch it coz its worth so much!!!
if you can get it i would say go for it.
