ok so how about a 8.5mm (.333) bullet loaded in a necked down 404 Jeffery case introduced in 1908 on a Model E ( A) Mauser platform........ there is your 338 in a Mauser and without that pesky belt. Given the modern bullet and powder treatment this package is identical to the 338 Win ! They have equal case capacities

None other than Jeffery's 333 ! Roll Eyes

Wow, that has got to be one of the rarest of all type A chamberings! Thanks for another Mauser history lesson!

Not rare at all tu2 Jeffery 333's were quite popular and in WW 1 they went after German snipers and machine gunners hiding behind mild steel shields with these ( Jeffery's 600 saw service in this application as well )

Pesky belt????? Ive heard this all my life, its been used so many times that whippersnappers love to repeat it and younger whippersnappers believe it...

Ain't nutt'n wrong with the belt, it even holds your pants up not exposing your watchamacallet. Works there and been working on the bolt action rifle for an eternity, and what about that track record archer sofa

Pesky belt Yes and we aren't talking bout old geysers who have keep their shorts from falling to their knees Roll Eyes

I'm a ZKK 602 man and it has a 5 shot mag capacity ! so here is my beef with the belt, when stacked belt on belt the rounds tilt under pressure of the follower plate. Its fine and dandy if they tilt nose up but I have seen with weak mag springs that the rounds tilt nose down and then they jam ! Not a problem when it's 3 down but when you go 4 or 5 it definitely becomes a issue ! hence the aftermarket heavier and stiffer springs !

My original 1939 Type A in 9.3x62 has a muzzle diameter of .588", just behind the front site base, which is about 15mm. For those that might be interested, Gottfried Prechtl has begun offering exact reproductions of this same front sight base in 15mm and 17mm (The 17mm size is correct for original Mauser 10.75x68 and 404 Jeff Barrels. I have one of each size on order, plus a Prechtl bolt handle that looks to closely resemble the one on my rifle (Duane Wiebe and others in the U.S. make similar handles as well.) For those that are interested, I suspect DPCD might make his 1930 Type A barrel to my 1939 barrels lighter spec, and install a Prechtl front sight. NECG/Recknagel three leaf rear sight look pretty good, and are very high quality. A recknagel front sight is more practical, as they are easier to get, at this point, but for those that wish to have their rifle look a little more original, the Prechtl front sight is the best option. I would like to have a run of reproduction Type A 4 leaf rear sights made up, but the interest that I'd hoped for just isn't there, and I can't afford to finance a run all by myself right now. DPCD also has a Type A stock pattern.

The 17mm Prechtl front sight would go well with DPCD's 400 Whelen barrels, as well, FWIW.

I find it amazing that the most ubiquitous big game cartridge in the world is dead last. I like the 7x57, but I wouldn't want one in a rifle this heavy. I think '06 and bigger would be my preference. A slender barreled Type B, with claw mounts, would be my preferred commercial Oberndorf Mauser platform for the 7x57 (or 6.5).

This one is pretty awesome.

Indeed! That is a gem! The 700mm barrel is super rare.
