* HELP I have a early fifties FN commercial Mauser. I need to know the barrel diameter 3'' +- in front of the stock. I don't have calipers and my gunsmith is 100 miles away. Can anyone help? thanks capt david

Use an adjustable wrench and measure the gap.

You should be able to pick up some inexpensive calipers at Harbor Freight or mail order.

I have a very early FN commercial (ser. #5111) I purchased on AR from a fine gentleman in an original 250-3000 caliber.

All those barrels had the same outside measurement as far as I know..The area you are talking about is a 4 inch sleeve and it measures 1.090 at 3 inches..These are wonderful rifles..I had a 30-06 until recently and it measured the same..
