Ran across this for sale in a feed store today. Newton rifle originally chambered in 256 Newton, but rebored/chambered to 270 Win. Original 24" barrel. Double set triggers. Clean metal. Weaver D6 scope in very nice condition. Serial number in the 28XX range. I may buy this as an investment. Any idea what this is worth? The price is $600. Well used, but mechanically functional rifle from a pioneer in early 20th century American firearms. I find the scope mount, alone, very intriguing, and wonder who made it, and what it is worth by itself? Thanks.

You sure come across some interesting stuff! I would jump all over that as it has lots of interesting , unique parts on it! I have never see that type of mount before, kind of like a pillow block. It is a shame that the buttstock broke off through the wrist though. Interesting rifle!

It's a shame that they rechambered it too as far as value is concerned.

I've decided against investing in this rifle. If I didn't have so many irons in the fire, I would buy it just to have. I swear up, down, and sideways that I have no vested interest in this rifle, so if someone wants it, I can get you the store owners contact info. He told me he's pretty firm on the price. I just talked to a gunmaker friend of mine about this rifle. He says the scope mount is similar to the old Bausch & Lomb mount, but perhaps not exactly the same.

I looked through a book of mine called, "Old Gunsights and Rifle Scopes". In this book I discovered one picture and reference, saying that this scope mount is a "Turner Scope Mount". No other info. The pic was from 1947.

It is too bad the cartridge was changed from he 6.5 to .277". But I personally think that is Newton's own fault (unintended consequences). He introduced the concept of high velocity to most Americans of the period. The .270 Winchester was just a natural extension of that, plus it made factory ammo one heck of a lot easier to come by.

I have an original Newton which also was altered from 6.5 to .270 Winchester. Looked exactly like yours until I had it rebarreled to .30 belted Newton (AKA .308 Norma Mag or .30/.338 Mag). I always liked the .30 Newton, but as brass had become virtually impossible to find in shootable quantities back when I had the work done, I went with the belted mag to both have brass and get pretty much identical ballistics.

My stock wasn't in near as good shape as yours, so I gave it to another AR member for use on his Newton which had no stock left at all, and had MPI build me one of the nicest composite stocks I've ever seen.

That whole "caliber change" concept is still leaving folks between a rock and a hard place with today's 20-30 year old rifles. If he owner is 40-50 years old he can leave it what it is and some day in maybe 30-50 more years it MAY be worth quite a bit more as a "collectible". Problem is, he will then most likely be dead or otherwise physically incapable of using it.

Or, he can change the barrel & chamber for something more easily put to use now and have his decision second-guessed 50 years from now.

I live in the latter group of folks, but many live in the "keep them all original" camp too.

And as the both own their rifles to fill their own wants and needs, neither church of beliefs can be reasonably required to justify which face of the rifle God its congregation prays to...

The Mount is an Ackley done by P.O.Ackley. When I was in gunsmith school they were very common,also probably the most miserable mount ever designed. Scope is easily removed,just grasp in the middle and pull up and twist. Only thing holding scope in Vee blocks is the spring. If the spring was not under the Vee blocks properly you fired the rifle and the scope hopped off. When I left Trinidad I had probably 15/20 sets of these in various degrees of completion as most of the students then built them.

I found a set on E-Bay. The the seller refered to it at Ackley/Turner mount.
