Hi all Brno experts,

Can any one tell me how high of scope rings are needed on a Brno 21 (original spoon) in order for the bolt handle to clear a leopold scope??

These are a full one inch from the bottom of the scope tube to the top of the bridge. Unfortunately very high rings are necessary to clear the bolt handles.

Thanks fla3006

I know you need very high but is really 1" necessary to clear a leopold scope...an alternation of this nice old bolt handle is a pity but 1" sounds too high for practical hunting.

Jonas, a full one inch may not be necessary but other high Warne rings I have for CZs and other Brnos are not high enough. Alf probably knows the answer. DO NOT GRIND THE TOP OF THE BOLT HANDLE. Get someone to make custom rings if necessary. Recknagel in Germany probably has some that are the proper height.

Thanks again fla3006,

I'd hoped (non expert estimation) that Warne "X-high" (18.16 mm) would be high enough. Unfortunately the store that imports Warne only had Warne "High" at the moment and I wanted to test/hunt soon, but you mean that with Warne high one still don't clear a leopld?

This beautiful little rifle is so well made (the action is the nicest I've handled) but...well I bought the rifle to hunt with.

I have one of these actions with the spoon bolt handle and will be having a light 9.3x62 built on it for use as a "mountain rifle" here in B.C. I will probably just get the 'smith to cut the spoon off and weld on a Brownell's ball handle I have so I can use a lower set of rings as the rifle is not original(obviously) anyway.

I have another with the round bolt and a third with the spoon bolt in nearly mint condition. I would never modify the bolt handle of a really nice specimen, but, will re-build a beater to non-original specs. Most of these that one sees here in Canada have had the bolt handles ground for clearance as guys who bought these when they were available at retail used them as ordinary hunting rifles and practicality came first.

What are the highh rings in the picture, Talley's ???

I have seen scores of these rifles over the past 40+ yrs. since I bought my first one, yet, I have never seen those rings before. I generally detest see-through rings, but, I gotta find a set of those for my 21-9.3x62 project. Probably impossible now.

I've seen them on a couple occasions at gun shows but not everyday. I think Recknagel makes some very similar. You might order one of their catalogs.

One might as well mount x56mm scope and go to Central/Eastern Europe for Sus hunt after dusk!
Gerhardt, Zeiss, S&B, Kaps, Swarovski/Kahles, Docter yes, Leupold no.
Gerhardt 'Nickel Supra' would be particularly good match for this fine rifle. beer

It wouldn't clear the fixed rear sight blade which is set back close to the receiver. Maybe a 40mm bell.

A lot depends on which Leupold scope you are using. On older models (3x) and some new models (2.5x Ultralight), they use a small 1.36" eyepiece. This helps the bolt clear when using high rings. If your Leupold has the larger 1.6" eyepiece (1.5-5x) then you will probably need the Warne extra high rings.

Thanks for all the info,
fla3006,
actually when seeing it mounted I guess these high rings could work as long as the scope doesn't weigh too much and see through seems more practical than detachable when the mount is so high anyway.

Do you have a picture of an original butt-plate, that's the only thing on mine that doesn't quite look original?

Didn't know Leopold had scopes with different sized eyepiece...definitely something to look into
