Stopped in the pawn shop today, they Proprietor handed me a rifle, told me I needed it. It is a 7mm Mauser. Is that the same as 7x57 that I hear so many good things about?

Same thing.

Love shooting precision and long range. Big bores too!

Recent college grad, started a company called MK Machining where I'm developing a bullpup rifle chassis system.

I am not sure what the action is, I am guessing a mauser of some sort. I did not have a chance to inspect, as wife was waiting in the tuck, honking the horn. It had the military contour barrel, and the stock appeared to be a military stock that was cut down and reshaped. The length of pull ws too short for me. I will look at it in the morning and get more details (if he has any...this is a pawn shop, and the guy is a nice old guy, but not sure how much he knows about anything outside of common stuff).

if it's a military then it's a Mauser....but only a few of them were 1898 Mausers.....most were prior to that and cocked on closing and had a small receiver ring.

If you can get a photo for us it would be a big help.

BTW.....military rifles are sometimes misquoted as to caliber.....so confirm it by checking the bore diameter if you want to shoot it.

Yes!...It happened to me - bought a Peruvian and the barrel was stamped "7mm mauser".

It was a 7.62 Argentine caliber.

I found out when the bullets pinballed down the barrel and missed the target at 50 yards....4 ft high.....3ft left....2ft right....had my real scare when I looked at the brass of the 3 rounds I fired.

They were fireformed to something very scary!!! Eeker

Have it checked!

I saw a fellow doing something similar at the range a year ago. He was shooting an old military Mauser in 8x57, and asked his buddy why the cases were splitting and didn't shoot particularly well. They were totally confused, so I picked up an empty. It was obvious that someone years ago had rechambered it to 8mm-06 cases as they were perfect matches to some empty .30-06 cases laying around. There were no markings at all on the barrel, I looked myself.
