Anyone have a good 300 H&H load for Elk size game. Looking for a load that will be effective out past 300-yards.

Thanks

I shot one of my first elk with a 200 gr Sierra Gameking out of an O6. Put her down with 2 shots to the shoulder. I took a nice 6 point with my 300 H&H using the 180 gr Hornady interlock. He was across a draw somewhere in the neighborhood of 325 to maybe 350 yards. I had to shoot him twice in the shoulder. Either shot would have been fatal but he just didn't go down right away. I would recomend using at least a 180 gr and would prefer a 200 gr bullet for elk.
As for me, I have gone back to using 250 gr bullets in a 338 for all of my elk hunting. There is such a profound difference in the way an elk reacts to the 338. (unless you shoot them in the head, break the spine, etc)
Just my opinion and it's worth what you paid for it. Good luck and happy hunting!

I'm using 200 grain A-Frames in front of 66 grains of H-4350.....for about 2,900 FPS in my .300 H&H

Vapodog,

Assuming that the shooter was proficient, what is the max range you would shoot an elk with that load? Also, how tough of a beast would you shoot? Moose? Griz? Big Brown?

Thanks

I used to use 75.5 grains 4831 under a 165 Nos Part. and I believe 70.5 grains under a 180 Nos Part.

That's from memory so someone check before loading that up . They worked well out of mine .

I plugged vapodog's bullet and velocity into JBM's trajectory program. If you use 1500 ft-lbs of energy and bullet velocity of 1800 fps you are looking at 550 yards +/-. That is a lot farther than I want to shoot most days.

I really like the 200 grain Nosler Partition. It shoots almost as flat as the 180 grain bullet and it will reach the vitals from any angle.

I have an old 300 H&H that was built on P-14 action. It has a 26 in barrel and I have always had the best groups out of this rifle using the 200 speer spitzer with a max charge of IMR 7828. The 200 partion shoots to the same spot in this rifle but I usually used the speer bullet. They just got the job done.

What is the actual max charge of 7828?
