I finally got the Savage 7mm-08 on the junk stock to shoot descent.

I threw away the old CCI primes and used a new pack of 200's and got about 2700 with 42 grains of Varget and 1 inch to 1.5 inch groups. Seems I had a couple under an inch and a straggler off. I tried a few of the Federal Match and got solid under an inch with both nosler 140 and Hornaday 139 BTs at 2700 -2720 fps so I guess the gun is a keeper after working it since last October.

I just need to fig out what 43 grs will do since BOTH Hornaday and Remington both give 2850 fps for the factory loads. Any ideas on a Better powder than Varget?

ALL velocities were taken at the same session on the Little Caldwell chrony. I hate to give up 150 fps to factory amomo.

If it shoots this good on the BB gun stock what will a Boyds do? Seems many here talk about upgrading the stock.

How can you be sure what to get with all of Boyds choices? What do you need to do to the stock? Bed it? Extra parts

Right hand Trophy hunter Model 11

From Boyds site.
SAVAGE 11, CLASSIC, BOTTOM BOLT RELEASE, DETACHABLE MAGAZINE, SHORT ACTION, FACTORY BARREL CHANNEL Barrel Dimensions: Point A = 1 5/16" and Point B = 3/4" Center to Center of Action Screws: 4 7/16" Over All Length of Part: 31" Comes with Boyds' 1/2" Rubber Recoil Pad. It is your responsibility to confirm the dimensions of your firearm with the supplied dimensions of our part. ATTENTION CUSTOMERS: This stock is designed for the Savage Detachable Box Magazine rifles with bottom bolt release (located on the front of the trigger guard). The magazine release is located on the bottom of the floorplate. Not designed for old style side magazine release. The magazine inletting is designed for the removable frame from the factory stock. MUST READ: If you have a XP model with a synthetic stock, you will need to purchase the bottom metal component system through Savage or any aftermarket component
supplier. Due to the many variations of trigger guards that have bed used for Savage Actions. Boyds uses a flat bottom metal design. Fitting for plastic and some metal models may be needed or contact Savage or Brownells for the flat bottom design. These stocks are designed for the 3 piece design DETACHABLE BOX MAG parts as found on wood stocks. Some plastic stocked models will require you to purchase additional parts from Savage or Brownells.

So what is this telling m other than I need to measure my screw holes to make sure.

Anyone own the nutmeg laminate and use their recoil pad or do you need to make changes?

What parts did you have to get?

Thanks,

Jim

I would check and see what barrel length they are using to get 2850 fps.

Don't believe all printed velocity claims. If you are chasing "published" factory load velocity you might as well look for unicorns as well.
Be happy with at accurate load at 2700+, animals will not complain about any lack of velocity.
I can't help you on the other question you have with the stock.
I would foam fill the stock you have then full length bed it if it worries you but if it shoots an inch why bother>?

I had replied in the first section.
I have the cheap Caldwell chronograph and the numbers are off it.
Old CCI 200's were giving 2550 and the new pack was doing ~2700 with 42 grains of Varget. The Federal Match 200's seemed to give a better group but it could be me on the two together then a flyer of 1 - 2 inches but it was hot and I was shooting 8 rounds before putting the gun in front of the shed fans to cool.

Both the factory Remington 140 and the Hornaday "deer hunter 139gr) bullets were giving around 2825 to 2860 as the rule.

Curious what 43 gr of Varget will give but it is hard to give up 150 fps to factory loads.

I stared using Varget with 140 grain bullets including Sierra Gamekings and Barnes TTSX and got decent results. I have since moved to Ramshot Big Game. I don't have a chronograph (maybe someday) but accuracy improved and it "seemed" that the loads were a little hotter with no pressure signs. I'm now loading 140 gr. Trophy Bonded Tip and Sierra GameKing's using CCI 200 primers. Nosler #7 shows velocity of 2832 fps for their mid load of 45.5 gr of Big Game. With this batch of powder, I got my best results just under the mid load. Nosler shows a max load of 47.5 gr. (compressed) and minimum load of 43.5 gr. Like others, I don't put much stock in velocities shown in reloading manuals and use them only as a guideline.

I'm a fan of Ramshot powders and use them for loads in my 358 Win and 9.3x62. I will soon be trying Ramshot Hunter in two other calibers. These powders meter really well.

A new stock might make it more comfortable to shoot but probably won't do anything for accuracy. In a 7mm-08 recoil shouldn't be an issue. I always felt that the heavy recoilers with Savage stocks stomped like a mule. I traded out for B&C stocks on a couple of mine and they are more comfortable to shoot. The new stocks didn't change accuracy.

You might want to try H4350 or IMR4451. Work up. in my 7mm08 22 in barrel it gives quite close to advertised velocity

My Kimber Montana 7mm08 shoot very well & I get sub inch groups 5 shots with some loads.

My go to powder is Varget (AR2208). Most common bullets used are Rem corlokt PSPCL 140 gr & 150 gr, Hornady 139 gr SP and TSX 140 & 150 gr.

I consistently get 2700+fps with 150 gr bullets. The 140s are loaded for accuracy and I never bothered to get max loads but 2800 fps is easy.

I even got good results with 160 gr Accubonds and H4350 (AR2209) - 2600 fps and around 1 inch groups.

I wonder if there is any good load info for Re17.

I have taken deer and other game out to 300+ meters with this rifle.

Jim,..you gained 150 FPS from old to new primers.. wow.. I have shot thousands of primers in my 35 years of loading. old, new, CCI, win, fed,& rem, I have never gained or lost no more than 20-30 FPS with any primer, of the same powder charge. I use the same powder in my 7-08 as I do my 308..

It was funny but it did ans some longer range shooting last year where I was shooting a bear target at 400 on a deer lease and the bullet was dropping way low with the 7 mag. All the other shots out to 300 you never would notice the difference and all held the under an inch group with the 270 or 7 mag.

It was funny a couple weeks ago that the 40 gr of Varget shot faster than the 41 and 42 gr and the least velocity was 42 gr of varget.

You might want to do some double checking with another chronograph.
