Been doing some shopping for new rifle and have heard good and bad about subject products and curious how some of the owners feel about the rifles? Planning on 6.5x284 in heavy sporter version and interested in the quality of their barrels. Won't be used for hunting as much as match style shooting. Any and all comments appreciated.

The MRC short action is perfect for the 6.5x284 as it is longer than the standard short action with a longer magazine. I built mine in 2004 and its best groups to date are 1.2" at 400 yards and 5.25" at 1,000 yards.

I put a 26" Krieger barrel on mine though, I don't know how MRC barrels rate.

Contact Dave Bruno. I can get you his email and number(s) if you need them. Get a BAT action, a Krieger, Bartlien, Obermeyer, or Hart barrel, Jewel trigger, and a McMillan stock.

The BAT action will run you about $1000. Dave builds a kick-ass rifle. He's working on a 6.5x284 for me for hunting. I should have the Stiller Predator action sometime in January. He already has the barrel. Stock is on order from McMillan and I'll get a jewel trigger soon.

Good performance from the Montana Rifle based on your report. I do understand the BAT is a good action and am familiar with Krieger, Jewell and McMillan and all good gear. As mentioned, most likely the rifle will be used for only informal "club" type shooting, not serious Long Range/Prone/Sling type shooting for already have a built 40x/Krieger/Jewell/Master Class stock rilfe. My goal on this rifle is to duplicate the profile, style, etc. of the Winchster Model 70 Target rifle, Marksman style walnut stock, but in 6.5/284-26"barrel w/ .750muzzle diam. A multi purpose set up if you will. Thanks for the feedback.

dsiteman, Are you going to use an origional winnie marksman stock or new made?.The oldies are out there abd take a lot of looking before you find one. Last one I found had a kick-ease buttpad on it and aside from a few scratches is was in excellent condition. When I heard the price of 35 bucks I darn near broke my hand getting the wallet out of my pocket. Had been looking for 10years. Normally they go for at least 100 bucks. Ebay when they have them tend to be expensive and still they sell. I have a post '64 winchester match rifle that I paid $500 for about 12 years ago, has the clip slots machined in the receiver bridge and an except for the replacement butt pad is in excellent condition.
