Went to a local gunshow several weeks back. I usually go to look around, talk to a couple of vendors and shoot the breeze. I almost never see anything that I can't live without. In fact I was so sure I wouldn't buy anything that I didn't take any thing to trade, cash or credit card.
I had been there about 45 minutes when I dropped by a new vendors booth. He had a manlicher stocked mauser 98 in 35 whelen. It was smithed by a local gunsmith by the name of Wayne Barnett, a fellow who was pretty popular in the 70's and 80' here in the Houston Texas area. It had an absolutely beautiful piece of wood, jeweled bolt w/ spoon handle, double set trigger and a reasonable price. I couldn't resist. Pix follow.

sweet! Something odd about a Whelen on a Mauser- a 9.3x62 would seem more appropriaste. What do I know- I built a 9.3 on a Model 70!

Nice! You must have picked that up before I made it to the show. I had hit all those last few shows and didn't catch that one. I did pick up my classic 35 at one of the earlier ones.

If a rifle can be described as "sexy," then yours definitely meets that description! Just bought a Ruger 77 RSI and it is nice, but not on the level of the one you bought. Great caliber as well. Outstanding!!

That's a PRETTY baby! Congratulations.

Mind if I ask what it went for?

mstarling,
no I don't mind you asking. I paid $900 for the rifle. I might could have got it for less but the seller was nice enough to hold it for me until I could come back, with only my word that I would do so. Consequently I paid his asking price. Would I have liked to have paid less, of course. Would I have paid more?

That is a very, very sweet rifle.
Great work by Mr. Barnett, and a great snag by you.

Hey, I like that. I'm beginning to think that's the best way to acquire a custom rifle is to find one already built and buy it.

Congratulations on a great find.

Beautiful rifle! Great cartridge! too bad the cartridge stamping is screwed up. Sorry, just a pet peve of mine. IMO, a beautiful rifle should have the cartridge marking engraved by laser, jeweler, or at least aligned properly. At least he got his name straight. Lou

Geedubya,

You have quite a beautiful rifle. Congratulations.

As of late I am into full stocked rifles. Good luck with that and tell us how it shoots.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

It just doesn't look right with a Mannlicher stock and no front sight.
