I've always had a yen for a 300 H&H, I don't know why, maybe I'm old school, maybe I'm old, maybe it's just cool.
As I've mentioned before, I inherited a number of rifles from my Brother. He listed 3 300 Win Mags on his gun list. Preparing for my last safari I pulled them out and took them to the range to check them out. The first step was to run a round through each. Problem with the model 70, a round wouldn't chamber. Something must be wrong with it, maybe David bought it so he would have a pre 64 action to use for a custom rifle. Back in the safe, gone but not forgotten. I began to think about it last week, "what should I do with the action?" Thanks, by the way for the advice. Last night I pulled it out and examined it. Barrel looks good, chamber looks goood, "why won't it take a round?" I look the serial # 77458 "whoa this is old - Hmmmm?" I check the barrel again "300 Magnum" "Could it be?" Today I drop by Gander Mtn and pick up a box of 300 H&H. Pop one in and it chambers slicker than snail snot. YES it's a 300 H&H. I figure it predates the Win Mag, thus the legand "300 Magnum". I don't know why David listed it as a Win Mag, that wasn't like him, but I do know what I'm going to do with it! Take it to Africa in 2008!

Thank the Lord you didn't tear it apart. The .300 Magnum will do you wondeful service and be more than enough gun for some fine trophys. Good luck and good hunting.

Terry, that's way cool. If it was me it would be some bastard caliber nobody, especially me, would want, much less one I had a yearning for.

Congrats!

Lucky find... and as 0308 said, thank goodness you didn't accidentally blow that beauty apart chambering the wrong ammo in her!

yes, the winchester was marked 300 magnum as the H&H was the only one atr the time.

Here's wishing you have a ball with it!

I've always wanted a 300 H&H, but your story is fantastic. That it was your brother's makes it even better.

Being a lefty, it'll never happen for me. Thanks for letting us live vicariously through your great luck.

According to http://armscollectors.com/sn/winlookup.php the rifle was made in 1948. Vapodog is right that at the time, Winchester was only offering 300 Magnum chambered rifles in 300 H&H Magnum, even though Weatherby introduced the 300 Wby Mag that same year I believe, at commercial ammunition.

It's funny you mention that, because I'm a lefty and had a similar scenario arise at a gun show. There was an original, pre-64 M70 super grade in 300 H&H on the rack for this one dealer. To me, that rifle is the definition of old-school cool. Sadly, I had to pass as it'd be useless to me to try and shoot. Frowner

Congrats to TerryR on a superb find! Enjoy it well!

First TerryR congratulations on your find.
Clayman that is funny as I am left-handed also but I have never shot a lef-handed bolt action in my life cause I never had one. I would probably have to train myself to get use to it.
