A freind is leaving the 13th for a caribou hunt. The scope on his 300wm bar broke a couple of days ago. (another cheap simmons) Another guy he knows borrowed him another BAR in 30-06. He wanted me to help him make sure it was sighted in. He showed up at the range with the rifle and 19 rounds of 150 gr Federal ammo. I took the rifle and made sure it was empty and the first thing I notice was it had a cheaper simmons scope and that the cross hairs here on angle. He fired first round went about 3 inch high 2nd about 1 inch from that the 3rd one about 5 inchs low. I shot a 3 group about 2 inchs low and 4 in dia. We fired some more all hit about 2 inchs low. I ajusted the scope to put it about 2 inchs high . The next group was 4 inchs high 2 inchs to right. We are down to the last 3 rounds I ajusted the scope half way back the way it came. The last 3 shots were kind of 2 inchs hign and kind of centered. They all were on a 8x11 paper not having a differant scope nor the ammo nor the time. I told him to get very close to his caribou. I offered him one of my bolt guns but he said he was used to the bar and was going to take that. Oh well you can lead a horse to water but it hard to make them drink. I was not impressed with the rifle, ammo or scope. The whole package was wrong.

P dog shooter, it was good of you to offer your friend one of your bolt guns. When getting some ammo for the borrowed BAR, hopefully he will purchase the exact same factory ammo, even though it probably won't be from the same lot. Caribou offer a big kill zone, so 4" grouping is not heinous for that particular game animal. I've found many BAR's to shoot really well, but they are finicky about what you feed them. I have one in .308 right now, that I am still searching for the right load for. I like to shoot factory ammo in my auto's, and I've only shot one type so far, I am unsatisfied with the 1.5 to 2" groups it is producing, but I have high end optics and mounts on it as well. Hopefully you can help your buddy re-scope and get his original BAR shooting well. Regards--Don

That's good guidance p dog shooter, B&C reticle or not, the Leupolds are always dependable, quality scopes. He shouldn't have any issues with one for as long as he shoots that BAR. Take Care--Don

I've only had experience with one BAR, a .270 that I rigged for my father-in-law many years ago with a Leupold 2-7. It has always shot beyond my expectations for an autoloader, and has an amazingly good trigger. Now that father-in-law is gone my son has it. I used it to drop three hogs out of a group a couple of years ago. Your suggestion about his getting a quality scope for his gun should be heeded.

And probably some better rings. I don't understand guys who expect a Simmons to keep working and risk expensive hunts on them. I could shoot better groups than what your talking about with no scope. Nate

I think it was Wellington who said, "Lord preserve me from my friends. I can handle my enemies myself." You did the best that you could. analog_peninsula analog_peninsula ----------------------- It takes character to withstand the rigors of indolence.
