Posted regarding a possible conversion to a pre 64 70 .30-06 I had collecting dust. That query turned into a .404 Jeffery project.
The update...... Bought a new CZ 9.3x62 today. Really like the iron sights and especially the price.

Found a same taper pre 64 barrel but a HART in .284". I've decided, though I'm "heavy" on 7mm's to rebarrel the M70 to 7x57. About as Classic as they get IMHO.

Have some Lapua and Norma 9.3 brass already. Ordered up some dies and bullets; 270 Speer and 250 Nosler BT's. Looking forward to a shooting session with the CZ early next week. STILL have a cow tag in my wallet so it may get its baptism pretty quickly. Would have liked to find some 286 partitions but they were out.

WW760 or H414 should work right?? Any advice??

I've used the 250gr BTs in my 9.3x62. Since you're talking iron sights, I'm assuming you have the 550 Lux like mine. I've only used RL 15 in mine, and with the irons it has been very consistent from an accuracy standpoint. I haven't had these loads over a chronograph so I can't comment on velocity, but 58grs seems to be the max in my rifle. My load is borrowed from a fellow member (thanks Phil).

Lapua brass, CCI large magnum primer, 250gr Nosler BT, 58grs RL 15, 3.35" OAL

I don't have optics on my rifle yet so the accuracy potential has yet to be realized. Phil said sub-MOA groups are the norm with this load in his rifle.

Frank, i did quite a bit of reloading this summer for a freinds 9.3x62, Dennis Mallory, i'm sure you know him. He's a good freind of D. Erhardt's and Bill Cole. Anyway RL15 gave much better results than H414, didn't try any W760. Then we tryed some VV550 and that really worked well in his rifle. Excellent accuracy, .600" and 2780fps with no pressure. That was with a 250 NorthFork in Norma brass, Fed 210 primer and 65gr of VV550. You know the routine, back off 10% and work up. Hope this helps Frank. [Smile]

Lotta dittoes here......I'm about to attach a scope to my CZ-550 Lux in this caliber to see how accurate it REALLY is. The factory irons are quite nice, but my 48 year old eyes are the weak point in the accuracy circle here. So far, the rifle has fired Nosler 250 BT, Speer 270 SP, and home-cast 270 FN (Eirik's design by Mtn. Molds) about as well as I can hold with irons at 100 yards (1.25"-1.5"). I've used H-414, WW-760, and surplus WC-852 slow and fast lots, and 18.0 grains of Alliant 2400 does great things with the cast bullets minus the thump--cloverleaf groups, all five rounds touching at 50 yards. THANKS A BUNCH for the data on higher-end velocities, I will use it as a guide as I assess accuracy with this rifle after scope installation. My loads have only gone to 2300 or so with the 270 Speer, and I haven't chrono'd the 250's.

I have had poor luck with velocity with WW760 and excellent success with H414 even though they are supposed to be near identical????????? I also like RL-15...RL-15 and H414 have always been my choice.

Yes , mine is a LUX model with the irons.

Ol Bull,

I'd NEVER let ANYONE know you had any affiliation with Dennis MALLORY!!! I think we are still investigating him regarding some assaults on sheep a few years ago! Dennis was THE driving force behind my love affair with the .338-06. Known him for many years. Just don't ever allow him near farm animals. LOL

I'll have to get going with some H414 RL15 in a day or two. I'll keep you guys informed if I do pop a cow this week.

Frank I have the lux cz 550 as well and have a 2-7 leupold Vari X11 in warne fixed mounts on it. Shoots well I use lapua cases wlr primers and 56 gr of AR2208 behind the speer 270 gr bullet, this load works well on grassy's and will work well on pigs as well. The next bullet I will try will be woodleighs 286 gr protected point or there 250 gr soft. Woodleigh's are my favourite bullets [Cool]

I love my 9.3x62 cz as well [Wink]

Frank, Dennis says Hi and " he was only helping the sheep thru the fence" [Eek!] [Wink] Seriously if you need any help with your 9.3x62 just ask. Dennis said "Remember if your 9.3's chamber was cut with an ol .363 reamer and they don't make .363 bullets anymore, only .366, you will have pressure problems"

Frank, just reread your original post. You won't have any trouble with your CZ 9.3 [Smile]

Despite 80 mph winds, then way below zero temps, my last hunters in and out...... Finally got to load a few rds and shoot the new CZ 550.

With RL15 and the 250 ballistic tips at 2400 fps its quite accurate. I was most amazed at how well I could shoot it with just the iron sights. A set of Talleys on the list for Santa. Have to smooth up the bolt a bit but having just scratched the surface, I'm very happy with the gun.

The Lapua brass loaded fine, have to order up some more. Now all I need are a box or two of 286 gr partitions.

Darn [Frown] Here I thought you had a M70/9.3x62 conversion all figured out, Frank. A long action M70 should work fine, shouldn't it? Hmmm, a winter project???

Ray - Supposedly, H414 and W760 are one and the same, made by Primex at their St. Marks facility, and put into cans marked either W-W or Hodgdon. My experience HAD been similar to yours (H414 outdoing W760), until I opened my new canister of W760. This lot of W760 is now performing better than H414 in my 7-08 and 9.3x62 [Confused] 'Course, the next batch of H414 might turn the tables.
