Got a decent Buck this year in Oregon's Hepner unit, It was a 3x3 with eye guards, and i was very happy with the shot , i hunted 1 weekend with my savage 99 .308. Did not get a shot, except at a running coyote, and it was a very close miss.
So i went back to work and returned with my pre 64 30,06, shooting 150 grin federal factory ammo at 2925. My friend spotted a buck about 200 yards off resting under a tree. but there was a very steep creek bed between us. He really wanted me to take the shot, but getting this guy back to my jeep was going to be very tough.
He is 17 i am 59. About this time the buck gets jumpy, and starts heading up the canyon, so we sprint, (sort of) to my jeep and drive to the end of the canyon. I jump out and run to where i expect him to come out and only had to wait a few seconds before i see him running at about 120 yards in front of me. Led him perfectly and dropped him flat , shot through the neck.
So we get him gutted and in the jeep and head back to camp. and we didn,t go more than 3 miles when we see 4 bucks resting in plain view on a ridge. My tag was filled and my friend didn't have one at all. but i grabbed my binoculars and took a good look. 2 of them looked like the bucks you see at Cabela,s and the other two were border line trophy's. And they just laid there and stared back at us for 5 minuets, i lazerd the biggest at 214 yards. We worked pretty hard to get the buck in my jeep and were i a criminal type, i could easily have shot 2 of these before they got to there feet.
Been hunting for 35 years and have never seen big bucks act like that before. probably never will again either. But i know where they live, and i will be back next year,,,,tj3006

Too bad that it's not like fishing and you can't just throw the little one back when you catch a bigger one.

However, when hunting prairie dogs I do hew to the ecologically sound practice of "shoot and release".
